additional clouds not shown on VS stones? how bad can it be on VS stones?. It seem like almost impossible to find an SI - VS stone w/o the word "clouds" on the lab report.

I understand the comment "Clarity grade is based on clouds that are not shown" but how about "additional clouds not shown on VS stones"? how horrible can it be on VS stones?

I wondered about this also, as my latest acquisition - a VS1 - had that noted on the AGS report.

I struggled to understand where the heck they were when I couldn’t even see them in the magnified WF images. I asked them to review & advise, and they said (IIRC) the clouds had no impact on performance or transparency in my diamond.

And Bryan noted the general likelihood of the same re: VS stones in this thread: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/cloud-inclusions-impact-appearance.240103/

I would still ask whomever has a diamond I am interested in buying to first assess it in person anyway if that was noted on the cert ... just for peace of mind and because their eyes are likely farrrr more trained than mine. :wavey:

It is perfectly safe to purchase any diamond with a remark "additional clouds are not shown".

It is also safe if one of the imperfections type "cloud" and the clarity is Up to VS1, I would ask to inspect it if it is VS2 or lower clarity.

Probably because it is faster and easier to add the comment "additional clouds not shown" than it is to accurately indicate the inclusions on the plotting diagram. It's not necessarily that there are more VS-clarity diamonds with clouds, but rather a faster mode of operation.

At the same time, given the fact that more and more online dealers are providing clarity photographs and high-resolution video shot at around 35x magnification, it is becoming easier and easier for people to identify the inclusions within the diamonds while shopping from the comfort of home.

Remember that the industry standard for diamond grading is 10x magnification. Thus, the inclusions visible in the clarity photographs and high-resolution video are "bigger than life" and yet, the majority of clouds are literally of no consequence even at the higher degree of magnification.

Where clouds can be an issue is in the lower SI-1, SI-2, and I-1 clarity grades (I don't acknowledge EGL SI-3) where a larger cloud (cluster of pinpoint size diamond crystals) might be large enough to obstruct the light and/or make the diamond appear cloudy or milky in the region where it is located. This is usually visible in the clarity photographs and the majority of reputable dealers will walk you through the inclusions and help you determine whether any clouds present any issues.

Not to mention, that if the clouds were shown, the plot might look much worse than it is in real life. Many of the plotters plot with a heavy hand.

Is it possible if someone could post some photographs of a cloud? A photo with a regular image and then magnified so I know where to look on the stone. I have diamonds with "clouds" on my reports, and you cannot see them and the diamonds sparkle so I am also confused by this term.

Also, is cloud a GIA term only? I have reports for the same diamond from both GIA and AGS. The AGS report does not make any comments about clouds but it is an older report from 2003. The GIA report does say "additional clouds are not shown" in addition to "pinpoints are not shown". I have a complicated stone and it's supposed to be a super ideal! =)2

Do we care about pinpoints?

Thank you.

I love to take videos of my diamonds and send them to prospective clients. I have never been able to convincingly capture a "cloud not shown". Pinpoints are also hard to capture, but with significant enough magnification I can. Since clouds are tiny pinpoints it would seem to make sense that I could capture them convincingly, but at high magnification they look like tiny stars in the sky, not clouds.

Of course, if they were the kind of cloud that would interfere with light performance, they would not be in the brand that I sell, so that may be part of the reason they are so hard to convincingly capture.

Yeah I am still looking for my one cloud in my 2.31 Q-VVS2 CBI.
But I did find the one clear crystal in my 2.79 F-VS1 CBI. No additional clouds in that one.
