thanks for your input...I did not realize that GOG is not an appraiser. I thought any jeweler can do it...and as far as insurance..i havent any renters insurance (my friend had it and said it didn''t cover much after her apartment had been flooded so I always thought it was not worth it...) ...wow all this responsibility! Well, I am in Nassau County on Long Island..input is great!

the whole point is neither your friend nor your jeweler is an insurance agent who can give you valid information about what is or is not covered and what information you do or do not need to get a policy. call some of the insurance companies we have mentioned and talk to them. they will tell you what you need to do and whether they can cover your stone.
in any event, while getting "anyone" (ie any jeweler) to give an appraisal may be enough to get insurance, it is a bare minimum, and does not constintute an independent opinion unless the person giving the appraisal does not sell diamonds or jewelry.
