I recently had my 1.08 G VS1 diamond reset into a custom platinum setting. When I first got it I thought it was wonderful but after wearing it for a while I find that the diamond does not perform as well as it did in the previous bezel/prong setting. When I see it in the mirror, it seems to be lost and not as white and sparkly. The cut is pretty close to excellent, one arrow is off. I wore the other setting 24/7 and no matter how long between cleaning, it was always white and sparkled like crazy. I feel awful because it was redone, at no additional cost, because the first setting was too light, flipped and the diamond looked too small.
Is it possible to remove the stone and place a ring with prongs so the effect would be the same as the old setting? It seems like the diamond is set lower than before and the milgrain lip is like a wall around it. Could that be effecting the whiteness of the stone?
I also thought of having the platinum engraved so the setting did not look so flat.
My other option is to just redo it and pay for a new setting. This is my fault because when I received the photo of the wax, my gut said there was too much metal around the diamond and I did not say anything.
I'll attach photos of the old and new pendant.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I haven't worn my necklace in 2 weeks. It just makes me sad too look at it.

It' set too deep. Like a cave.

If it is excellent cut, the setting shouldn't interfere with the light return out of the top. I do think the setting would be far prettier if engraved. I think it is a lot of metal and the diamond may appear smaller because of that.

What are you looking to do with this pendant? Showcase the diamond, or showcase a piece of jewelry that happens to involve a diamond? Because if you want to showcase the diamond and you found the first pendant too small, then your problem wasn't that the pendant was too small but that the diamond is too small... and a 1 ct pendant seems pretty big to me. If your problem was that it flipped and moved, honestly imo the best pendants for not flipping are the rabbit-ears style... not the most stylish but they don't ever flip on me. If the problem was that it moved around your neck, well, necklaces tend to do that; I wouldn't worry about it. I think you need to identify YOUR specific goals before we can really offer advice.

MY specific goal is to have my diamond be as white and sparkly as it was in the original setting. This setting does not flip and move. I had a setting with the "rabbit ears" and it made me crazy that it was always riding up my neck.

DS, I think the extra metal makes the piece look flat. That is the only way I can describe it. I think I saw on here that DK does have access to the engraver that does work for SS. Do you think by having a thin polished bezel and then engraving will help with the appearance of size and pretty up the metal?

I keep editing my response - :wavey: IMO the original setting showed more of your pretty diamond and the new setting shows more of the setting than the diamond.

I agree with the others - the diamond looks fine but there is just a lot of metal around it dwarfing the stone. Sadly, I think you may have to start all over with another setting.

Can DK just cut out the outer metal of your current setting so that there's less metal around it?

I feel your pain! I have a pendant and the flipping diminished the appearance of the necklace. I'm doing a re-set too.

Personally, I'd scrap this setting and start again. Maybe go with a heavier diamond halo bezel that slides. Bling it up.

IMHO, there is too much metal around the diamond and it makes the diamond less prominent. I think engraving will not cure the ratio of diamond to metal appearance. I would not mess with the setting but rather start anew. BUT I would keep that setting and try to find a rich and intense colored stone that can be set where the diamond was. Good luck.

Keep in mind your old setting seemed to illusion set your stone. Your stone is going to look bigger and be the star in that old setting. Whereas your new setting doesn't focus on the stone.

I also know your round brilliant should reflect all light coming into it from the top face. I still feel with pendants, having it more open would help with its performance. Here, your bezel covers a small edge of the stone. The miligrain lip also prevents some light from reaching the stone. I know all of this probably has a minor effect but the top edges especially, is where a diamond in a pendant collects the most light. Why block it?

There's simply too much metal. Maybe some engraving would help?

I am going to send an email and have my diamond reset back in the previous setting. Now what to do with the platinum setting?

I would like your current setting with a gemstone in a deep color. The contrast of the metal and gemstone would appeal to me.

I just sent an email and asked for my diamond to be put back. I'm hoping he will take the platinum setting back and let me get a partial credit for something else.

DK was very gracious, as always. After the holiday, I will be sending it back and he will set my diamond back in the original setting. He is also giving me a credit toward something else. There is no way any jeweler, in my area, would be so kind. I am so lucky to have worked with him on so many projects.
He just had a contest on his website and the ring that he and Amy picked, as the winner, was the one I voted for. I was tempted to get that one before and now I have a credit so it may all work out.
