Noob Question on a Heart Shape Diamond

The diamond is very shallow. The length/width ratio is .87 which is a little squat for my taste, but it's a personally preference. When I was shopping for a heart shape I consulted https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/heart-cut-diamond for cut guidlines.

Additionally, in my opinion the IF clarity is overkill. You could get a much larger diamond for $7k by dropping to VS2 or so, with no perceptible decrease in clarity.

Shopping on Blue Nile is tricky. I would not buy a heart shape diamond without at least seeing a picture- I found that a lot of them had shapes that I didn't find pleasing. It goes beyond just the length/width ratio- the depth of the notch and shape of the lobes are important as well.

Also, I hated it when people asked me this question while I was shopping for a heart, but I have to ask :) Are you sure she wants a heart shaped diamond? It's a very specific cut and some people love it and some people hate it. If it's what she specifically wants, go wild! I knew my fiancee wanted a heart cut diamond from the beginning, and she's thrilled with her ring.

Thank you for the quick response! I definately wanted a bigger rock but with the price range and the clairity i was looking for it could only be in the 1 ct range. I was looking at diamonds at a brick and mortar the other days and i can definately see the inclusions in the diamond it self and I don't want that in my gf's ring that i plan on proposing to her with. Wouldnt you be able to tell the difference in the clarity between a VS2 vs a IF ?

I hav e about a year to finish working hard to grind out the money for the diamond so any additional tips would be greatly appreciated =D
thank you once again!

Virtually all (GIA or AGS graded) VS2s and plenty of SI1s are eye-clean, meaning you cannot see any inclusions without magnification. Unless she is planning to carry a loupe around to show people her ring, no one will be able to see any difference between IF and VS2.

Also remember- IF does not mean it is "flawless", just that the inclusions are not visible with a 10X loupe. Almost all diamonds have inclusions. The important thing is to get a stone without inclusions visible the naked eye. Don't pay for something you can't see, ie the difference between VS and IF clarity.

If you saw VS2s with visible inclusions in a brick and mortar store, odds are they were not VS2s graded by a reputable lab (GIA or AGS). Other labs may grade a diamond VS2 which GIA would grade SI1, SI2, or even worse.

Haha! She has always stated she wanted a heart shape diamond. She thinks its unique as most people have princess cuts or round. I actually perfer a round diamond but she has stated that she's the one wearing it everyday. So rule of thumb is happy wife=happy life =P

What's the largest size i can get with a 7 grand budget for the loose diamond?

Thank you. I really do like james allen also. I really like the policy of 60 day returns so if anything i can always view it return if i dont like it.

I wished finding a nice diamond was so much easier, I guess i have a lot of learning/research to do still!

Since light return with a heart-shape is going to be less than a round, have you thought about a fancy-colored diamond?

Leibish is currently running a 15% special off of all of their heart-shaped stones. I'd give them a call to see what they might have available in your price range.

If you halo-ed one of these stones, it would have a nice size and be completely unique:

0.52 Carat, Fancy Vivid Orangy Yellow, SI2

0.15 Carat, Fancy Intense Pink, SI2

0.90 Carat, Fancy Intense Yellow, VS1

0.17 Carat, Fancy Intense Pink, VVS1

I like the one Julie posted as well, and agree buying hearts are "challenging".

Have you looked at Diamonds by Lauren?

cheers--Sharon

That .9ct yellow heart is cuuuute. But, if she wants a colorless heart cut diamond I would buy her a colorless heart cut diamond :)

Thank you all for the great feed back. You guys are super nice and I really appreciate it! I am a total noob at this and still learning a lot more about diamonds!

She is looking for a colorless diamond but i really appreciate the time you took in providing me with links =D She does like the halo idea i know that.

I have not looked at diamonds by lauren yet but i am doing it right now =D

wow! That is the exact type of halo my gf was looking at. That looks beautiful! Now i just have to get a setting similar to a verragio setting for a heart shape halo. she likes verragio due to allt he intricate designs as she states lol

I know this isn't really what you're looking for in terms of specs, but I thought I'd post the link anyway. Jbeg has a 2 carat heart-shaped diamond halo ring for $9,250. It's K/L color so much much lower than what you want, but it has strong blue florescence which will help with that. Basically, you're compromising color and clarity for carat weight (and I think it's a pretty shape).

It's a little more than halfway down the page.
