Last week I was inspecting my engagement ring and I noticed what appeared to be an extremely tiny nick along the girdle of my 1.4 ctw oval centre diamond. I had my ring appraised by Harold Weinstein (in Toronto) earlier this year so we took it back to have them inspect it. They confirmed (under the microscope) that it was in fact a nick, but that it is so insignificant it has no bearing on the clarity or durability of the diamond. We then took the ring to our original jeweler who seconded this opinion. The appraiser at Harold Weinstein said that the girdle is thick on the diamond so the nick does not impair durability.
However, I am nervous after reading many threads on this site concerning nicks/chips in diamonds that I should be concerned about my stone, and was hoping to get the opinion of some of the experts on this site. If both the appraiser and my jeweler think that the nick is insignificant, should I just try to forget it is there? Or should I consider having the diamond recut/polished to remove the nick? What about notifying my insurance company?
