Most of my gemstone knowledge lies in colored stones and I primarily stay in the CS forum. Recently, I peeked my head into the diamond areas of PS and found out I rrreeeaalllyy like old cut diamonds. A lot. I can't get them off my mind! I like them and especially when they have the slightly warmer colors.

I don't know how to begin learning about the old cuts and what their names mean to how their shapes/facets look.. I've read over quite a few posts here but everything feels like a foreign language. Googling made me even more confused and overwhelmed.

I don't know where to start. I need advice or links to other posts here on PS or anything that you think would be helpful.
I also need advice on how to begin finding these stones when you are in the market to buy one.

Thanks so much you guys.

Re: Newbie trying to learn about old cut diamonds. Overwhelm

I spent a lot of time on Jewelsbyericagrace.com and her photo gallery/smugmug looking at all the different stones and their certificates, which I think helped me quite a bit! Plus Grace was incredible in answering questions, and from what I've seen their prices are really reasonable :)

hey there!

So I'm not an expert but this is the path I followed to at least start my education in old cuts. When I started to see some antique stones about 3 years ago I started to pay more attention on the forums when people would post about them. I found Dreamers Old Cut Guide to be very helpful!

Just a random helpful thread with lots of info from the Old Cut prominite posters:

Once I understood the lingo I went on JbEG to look at diamonds that had that characteristic.s that I was reading about I also checked out the Antique & Vintage Forum as they have a pinned thread on diamonds. From all of this I discovered that I prefered diamonds that were K/L/M/N and I loved the pillow-y look of an antique cushion over the more round OEC or OMC. I'm still just a beginner but I have found these threads have helped me the most to at least wade through the waters.

I am beyond excited to start reading these threads! I skimmed through a couple of them and I can tell these will help me. I hate that I have to go to bed for work or I would dive in now.
Thank you so much!
