I have been lurking for a while and what awesome information. Now I have a question and would love some input. My boyfriend and I have narrowed our selection down to two stones. Being novices we want to be sure we are getting what we pay for

I have a copy of the cert for stone 2 and some details for stone 1. Both are beautiful to look at and I don''t mind the small inclusions.

Both stones are marquise (I really like the shape)
#1 is HDR certificate
3.02 ct
color D
SI2
depth - 61
measurements - 14.66 x 7.67 x 4.75
1 slightly noticable to the naked eye inclusion
$19,800

#2 is EGL certificate
3.0 ct
Color E
SI3
depth - 66
table - 62
crown - 14
pavilion - 46
girdle - thick, faceted
polish - good
symmetry - good
culet - small
measurements - 13.88 x 7.60 x 5.01
several slightly visible to the naked eye inclusions
$15,900

Thanks in advance for any feedback

You have not seen the stones... right?

I would not mind the clarity grades either, but since inclusions are there it is better to actually see what they look like in person (or, even better, some 3X dark field pics).

I should have mentioned, I have seen both stones several times. Both look great in person. The inclusions are barely noticeable unless you know where to look. In the sunlight they are both VERY "SPARKLY"

Not much one can do with some numbers about a marquize cut. However, you may want to look over the "fancy shapes" tutorial right here and consider what the one standard for this cut I know of says (LINK) should be considered desirable.

Oh.. I was posting in the same time, I guess.

Not much can beat seeing the stones inn person, I am affraid. If you would worry about wether these are close to how brilliant a marquize could get (and this is not the particular strength of the model) - than there are tools to investigate this.

The prices seem quite good. I hope there will be some certificate for both.

Both stones are certified. The D-SI2 is HRD and the E-SI3 is EGL.

The proprtions of a MQ. diamonds should be in the 2:1 ratio length to width.
For the amount of money you are spending I think you should drop in color and go for better quality!

I would be weary of si3's, they are in most cases I1's by G.I.A standards,And are not EYE clean.
Go the extra mile and get a stone that has at least an si1 and at least a G color preferably G.I.A certed.

good luck

Thanks for the input. I am leaning towards the D-SI2 but the jeweler I am working with is bringing in a couple of others for me to look at this week. The SI2 has one very slightly noticable inclusion that I don't think will be seen with the setting. I will have to see what the others look like.

A second question regarding negotiating the price. How much below the asking price is a good starting point? 10%, 20% 30%

There are no set rules as to negotiating on diamonds,
you have to get on the web ,visit a few sites and compare prices, then go back and tell him you saw similar stones for x amount of $$$$$, and see if he can compete.

good luck
