Hi

I’m in search of an old cut diamond, I’ve found this one, it’s certificated (not GIA) as F SI1 with medium fluorescence at 1.5ct. It’s very pretty, I think it has a greyness to it but not sure! Also any ideas on cut would be appreciated - it looks OEC but no visible culet and a larger table I think. Any honest thoughts very welcome as I’m very much new to this! Thank you

I’m not an expert but it does look like an OEC to me. However, the angle of the second photo makes it look like there is a ”dead” area in the centre.

Have you seen the stone in person? There are lots of threads on here about facet patterns if you have a search. Also look at online vendors who have videos, like Jewels by Grace and Old World Diamonds to get your “eye” in. Personally I would always stick with GIA cert stones at this size and budget.

from the images, appears to be an oec. its either (cut) wonky, tilted (in the images), or both

Thanks @Snowdrop13 and @Bigfatfacets, what’s a ‘dead’ area? Here’s a couple more photos of it helps, I have seen it in person and like it but in all honesty I don’t know much about diamonds on any help is appreciated!

a "dead" area, usually, means a darkened area in a stone that isn't reflecting light. it is indication of a poorly cut diamond

Don’t most OECs have that flower pattern in the center that looks like a window or “dead” zone? Isn’t that part of their charm?

PS just using the same term, “dead” zone for consistency. I believe the space being referred to is in the center of the stone. I am not saying that OECs are dead looking but they have a flower in the center.

if i am understanding your question,

a well cut oec will not exhibit a darkend "dead zone."

the flower pattern found in oec's does not equate to a "dead zone"

a "dead zone" is indication of facets not angled to work together reflecting light back to the eye. in essence a poorly cut diamond

dead zones are undesirable

dead zones can appear in other cuts of diamonds. and is not exclusive to old european cuts

Thank you very much for the explanation. In OP's pictures, is the area in the center of the diamond what you would call a dead area or is it just the normal flower pattern that you find in an OEC?

to my eyes, in the 4 images provided by op, i am able to discern, a partial flower pattern in 1 of the 4 images and a full flower facet pattern in 1 of the 4 images. whilst, the darkened "dead zone" is present in 4 of the 4 images provided by op.

This OEC probably has a shallow pavilion. I would not say this is poorly cut. Reality is many non-branded OECs are cut this way.

Increase the viewing distance and see if the flower patterns light up, instead of showing the reflection of you or the camera.

Thanks you so much all, this is the proportions if it helps? I can’t attach a video can I?C400E3B0-7184-494B-8DFD-30A8378B2D2F.png

@mommylawyer

hopefully, this will better illustrate what i am trying to convey.

this is an oec that shows the flower pattern without the dead zone. now, do bear in mind that light is entering from the pavillion and these types of images although telling and revealing can also be very flattering.

to my eyes, there may be some "quietness" or "unliveliness" at between noon to one. and around the periphery of six to seven. but all in all, considered to be a good cut oec.

the diamond in op's images is set into a ring so light to the diamond is not as abundant. but to me, that darkening (dead zone) is obvious

yes, please do provide a video clip for us

How do I add a video? Seems to only let me attach photos...
