As you can see there aren't a ton of inclusions and when I looked at the stone I couldn't see them to the naked eye.

Just wondering if you see any glaring issues?

Much appreciated all!!

HCA gives a 6.2 score to this stone. For one, the CA is fine but the PA is a little steep. If it was to be cut properly, the CA should be a little shallower to compensate for the steep PA. Also not really feeling the 60% table. It's trying to be a 60/60 but I think it is failing quite spectacularly.

You can do a lot better.

Try doing some searches using these parameters (which are broadly similar to what other PSers have for their own personal searches):
Depth 60.8-62.8
Table 54-58
Crown 34.2-34.8 (sometimes a 35.5 crown angle works with a 40.6 pavilion angle)
Pavilion 40.2 40.8 (max 41 if crown is 34)

It's a complete waste of money, sorry. Can we help you find something? What is your budget?

BMFAng, we thought we saw the worst HCA score yesterday but this one tops it.

OP, do NOT buy this diamond. It is a turd.

Bummer...FYI the price was $8800. As I said I am very new to this. So I appreciate all the advice.

First off...What does HCA score mean?

Secondly my budget for the stone is around $9000, it's doesn't have to be perfect but I definitely want it to be eye clean. The stone is going into a halo setting FYI.

Please don't buy it, this is a terrible choice as the stone is poorly cut. It gets 6.2 on HCA - run away from it.

Please post your budget for the stone and we will help you find a nice one.

How do I know what diamonds are the right ones? Typically I only have been looking at GIA report and diamond under a microscope.

HCA is a performance tool developed by Gary Holloway (he posts here!). Run your numbers through the tool and toss anything over a 2.

Thanks! I'm glad I posted here instead of just going with the Diamond. Now how does it work, I do like the guy I've been working with. If you find a stone I like then can he have it brought in?

Thanks! You mentioned a halo setting - have you picked one? What is the budget for the setting?

I have picked one, it's a custom one. Kinda vintagey, $1850 14k or $2450 plat (95%). I'm leaning towards plat as I think it helps with the vintage look

Online, you can run an advanced search and set your depth and table parameters.

In a brick and mortar store, you just never know what you are going to get. The transparency online is so much easier to deal with.

Places we recommend: good old gold, whiteflash, victor canera, blue nile. Brian Gavin, High performance diamonds, james allen, sorry if I left anyone out!

Where are you buying the setting from and was this diamond there?

Who is the setting by? Halos are very tricky and in order to look good, they need to be executed flawlessly. No airlines, no chunky halos (unless that's precisely what you want), no extra metal, etc.
As whitewave indicated, we usually like a set of online vendors, no B&M..

The setting and diamond is from a local store. Not a brick and mortar but a guys shop that has been in his family.

Did you buy the setting already?

I did not buy the setting yet
Alright, please don't buy it.. I understand that you like the guy, but if the stone above is the one he suggested, I would not really work with him. Also, and most importantly - for a halo setting to look great, it needs to be custom made to fit the stone, not the other way around. Pre-made halos rarely look great as there is usually a huge airline (space between diamond and halo) and more often the diamond sits high. With your budget, we can find you a nice custom made setting. David Klass first comes to mind when you mentioned the "vintagey" design.

Sorry just to clarify he is waiting to make the halo until after I pick out the stone. I just designed the setting design so far. The process is one pick out stone, pick out setting. Then he builds a computer CAD model, makes a plastic mold to look at, and then last step makes the actual setting.

I would still reach out to David Klass and ask him for a quote with the design you have in mind. He creates beautiful vintage-inspired pieces.

I can definitely do that, is he located in CA? Just want to make sure I have to right place

You could always tell him that you only want to look at stones with an HCA below 2. (Then we still have to evaluate it).

1) he probably won't know what HCA is
2) he probably won't have ASET images or know what they are

3) he will tell you those things above aren't important,

If 1, 2 or 3 happens, I suggest you walk away.

First things first-- you know for a fact your GF wants a halo?
