So I went to get my new ring but the manufacturer made is so much smaller in scale even though the sample stone is a 1/100th of a millimeter smaller than my stone. THe jeweler will send them the sample to match in scale, but I want to make sure they dont' enlarge the halo or do something else wrong.

I wanted to purchase the sample ring but they said that there would be an airspace and it wouldn't look good.I asked if they add metal or something to fill it in and they said it wouldn't look good.

I don't know if the company will rework the sample and make it fit my stone. I don't want them to make the halo any larger or screw something else up. Can't they just put metal in there to make it 1/100th of a mm smaller to fit my stone???

Anyway, the platinum was so ugly, it looked like tarnished gray metal. I did not like it at all, so now I am getting it in 18kt wg.

I hope they get it right the next time it comes in.............

You can always rhodium plate a platinum ring if you prefer that finish. I just like platinum better since it doesn't wear away. But they should be able to make the ring like the sample. It is very puzzling that the ring they sent was different in scale from the sample! I hope they do it right this time!

Hi Diamondseeker! Thank you for your support by responding. It is very disappointing....and stressful too because how are they going to write that up to the manufacturer to ensure they do it right?? The second time I went to see the setting (before I ordered it) he showed us that my stone is this much (a hair thickness) smaller than the sample stone so they said, do you think you'd see a difference in the size? i said, no. and here I get a ring half the size...???

Do I get a new receipt in writing? How will they word it?? I mean, if it's only 1/100th of a millimeter smaller, why would the halo change?? or the scale of the ring??

I don't understand it unless the ring comes in two sizes.I think the best way to document it on the receipt is to say it will have a shank of 2.2 mm tapering to 1.8mm where it meets the head (for example), the same as the sample ring measurements. The halo width needs to be specified as well. It will help a lot that they are sending the sample ring this time. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

Did you snap any pictures? It's hard to understand how they could get it so wrong. I'm trying to visualize.

I told the jeweler that I want the ring just like the sample, hopefully they do it. I'll find out more when they call the company. I didn't get any pics because as soon as I saw it wasn't nearly the same size/scale, I handed it back...

Was your diamond in the setting that you just sent back? Did they say anything about the platinum color?

The 1/100mm difference is NOT the issue here - that is the difference between a harder or softer hand in the final polish, not something you can control in manufacture. And 1/100mm most certainly would not make any sort of visible or practical difference to look, feel, or ability to secure the stone.

Are you confident it was not a 1/10mm difference?

I am pretty sure it was, and he showed us on a mm scale, and it was a hair's thickness.....he said there would be an airspace so they couldn't mount my stone in it. Hoping they can do something back at the manufctr to adjust the sample. I don't trust they'll make it correctly from scratch.

No, my stone is still mounted in my setting...
