Hello,

I'm looking for a trilliant cut diamond the following is what I've been searching for:

Carat: 0.75-1.00
Colour: D/E/F
Clarity: anything to SI1, wanting it to be eye clean
Cut: Excellent.

I've also included polish and symmetry to be excellent as well. I would love some advice on this- the local jeweller is pushing my partner to Very Good on these but I'm unsure. Hes also saying to look at Very Good cut also. Looking at GIA certified stones.

Also, is there some info about the depth and table % and what these should ideally be?

Thanks for your help.

Annette

OP - I don't know much about trilliant cuts, but here's a link to a PS knowledge page with additional links that may be helpful to you... https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/trillion-cut-diamond.

My guess is, like for many of the fancy cut diamonds, you may want to trust your eyes and hopefully be able to request an IdealScope image on your leading candidates - generally, when it comes to fancy cuts, a Very Good (or even a Good) in Symmetry and/or Polish can also yield beautiful diamonds, so maybe don't limit yourself to considering only Excellent/Excellent... especially with a fancy cut like a trilliant, they may be far and few between.

It may also be worthwhile to contact Good Old Gold or WhiteFlash, and see if they are able to assist in your search - they have expert eyes and equipment so when you/they find your best candidates, they can offer you the additional images and reports that will illuminate the diamond's light return and quality. Trillions aren't commonly stocked, so perhaps check with them as to how costs are handled in this type of search.

Good luck, and please keep us posted...

HI Anette
Welcome to Pricescope!

Very interesting question- as trilliant cuts are rarely used for center stones- although it sounds like a great idea to me- we've done it on numerous occasions.
In terms of cut, there is no cut grade for trilliant diamonds.
Although many of the sites selling diamonds assign a cut grade to fancy shapes, the only widely accepted cut grade by experts is issued by GIA ( or AGSL)
GIA will issue a cut grade only for round diamonds. Therefore the cut grades you see on most sites are irrelevant. Same for a B&M issuing a cut grade on a trilliant.

As far as polish and symmetry: These are also somewhat deceptive ratings. Not to say that it's not nice to have VG or EX on polish and symmetry- but in a majority of cases, it's a mind clean issue.
A stone that has a rating of "Good" on either of these is not going to show any deficit in a vast majority of cases .
When it comes to Trilliant cut in particular, it's going to be impossible to find stones of EX/EX.
I just did a quick search of the worldwide dealer database- there's 37 stones within your parameters ( I restricted the search to stones graded by GIA only)
Not one of the stones had EX on either Polish or symmetry, although there were about half that had VG on one or both ratings.

When it comes to specifics about table and depth, trilliant cuts are in a class by themselves.
That is to say: the depth, for example is going to challenge any ideas people have about cut.
There are nice looking trilliant cuts with depths in the '30's up to about 50%. There's really no other cut where this would hold true- they would be considered way to shallow.
Table size can also vary from the 50' up to the 70's.
this is a shape that must be judged visually- the numbers tell you virtually nothing.

There are stones that have straight edges and others have bowed edges. Have you considered that aspect?
Hope this helps!!

Hello,

Thanks for your input.

I had been told the best way to purchase would be by sight however I'm looking to purchase online as the prices the local guys are quoting are ridiculous! So trying to figure the best way to do it, I prefer the straight edged stones.

As you mention Rockdiamond that the numbers mean nothing, how would you suggest I look at purchasing a stone if i'm unable to see them? Im located in Sydney.

Thanks for your help :twirl:

Hi Annette,
You're very welcome.
My suggestion is to use a vendor that has stones in hand and can evaluate, as well as sending photos.
