What exactly does the round ideal cut mean? Obviously its not hearts and arrows as they''d advertise that. . .can you give me some insight?

Well, if you run a search here on Pricescope, you'll see that four vendors are offering this stone, meaning that none of them has it "in house." Actually, two of the vendors label it as ideal and the other two don't label it at all.

The definition of ideal varies, and while sometimes people assume that an "ideal" cut would fit AGS0 proportions, there's no way to know without seeing the stone or at least it's certificate. What some vendors do (like BlueNile) is characterize stones as ideal if they have table and depth percentages within a certain range. However, not all of these stones will have the crown and pavilion depths to make them truly ideal. In the same manner, some stones that might read as "non-ideal" based on table and depth alone might have a combination of angles that works and gives it light return on par with that of an "ideal" stone.

Bottom line? Ask the vendor for more info, or consider looking at stones in that price range that have more info on them already. If a stone has a sarin analysis or the proportions listed on the EGL or AGS cert, that makes it easier to determine. The HCA is a tool here on the site (though some people say a calculator can't do what eyes do or take into consideration variations in the stone) that helps weed out stones that are sure to be poor performers based on the numbers. Also, an ideal scope image may help.

Some stones in that range with more info for comparison:
0.70 I SI1 H&A

0.70 F SI2 with idealscope

Also, keep in mind that your price seemed lower relatively speaking than these because it was an EGL cert.

"Flawed Grading" is quite strong wording, but this page (LINK) makes a straightforward comparison among some of the ranges of "ideal cut" grades out there, including EGL's.

You should be able to get some more datils on cut from the EGL report (crown and pavilion depth percentages) and make use of the respective table and the HCA standard (the Cut Adviser here).

Hope this helps
