Need some opinion

Hi Guys,

I am new to this site and was looking for some opinions. I am planning to purchase a 1.50 princess cut soiltare. I went on Jewelers row in chicago and received a price of 10,600 for just the stone. Below are the specs..

Color: E
Clarity vs2
Cut good
dept 69
table 78

What do you guys think about the price for that stone?
I was thinking about maybe dropping down to a F color with a very good cut, which will give it more shine...

Table is huge...73 or less, usually. there are even tables in the upper 50s.

unless there is a detail that is generally regarded as risky (such as an extremely thin girdle, a very large table) then no opinions can be made on a specific stone without pictures.

Hi Mike, here''s a link to a table that has ideal proportions for diamonds. Once you have those, you can plug them into the search at the top with color and clarity and get a sense of what the online vendors are selling them for. They will be lower because they''re online, but it''s a sense.

In your search, remember that cut is KEY for sparkle. That''s the most important ''C''. Good luck!! I''m no princess expert, maybe someone else will chime in?

Julie, thanks for the advice, i hadnt though of it that way...when i saw the diamond in person i thought it looked fine, but you do make a lot of sense....any comments on the F diamond which i posted?

Guys,

i went to a jewer today and he showed me a bunch of nice diamonds...pretty much all Fs and one E vs1/vs2 princess cut stones around 1.50 to 1.54. All these diamonds were certified from GIA as i saw the certificate and the stone are pretty new all ranging may of 07 till dec of 07. One thing i did not see is a cut grade on them.... i was told princess stones dont always have a "cut grade" and this is something new on princess cut diamonds... is this true? i have always been confused on this because i have not found a clear answer on this researching online....



any thoughts??

I searched DiamondsonWeb.com, for princess cut stones (it''s where I bought my RB).. and this one came up:

1.55cts, Signature Ideal cut, F VS2, GIA cert, EX/VG for Pol/Sym for $9822.

I''d go for the best cut you possibly can, to the extent that you could even consider dropping down to a G colour (which can be masked by an awesome cut), or an SI1 clarity (if you can either see for yourself, or get your vendor to check it''s eye clean).

Most PSers will agree it''s the cut that gives you the most WOW! in your stone.

Princess cuts don''t always have a cut grade? I''m definitely no expert, but that sounds kinda fishy to me...

i totally agree about getting the best cut possible... i want the most shine for my buck, that is why im concerned about a "cut grade" not being on the gia certificate. this particular princess diamond is an E VS2 ex/vg for polish and symmetry with non fluorescence. it has a table of 71 and dept of 73.1 which from the research i have done sounds like a pretty good stone...

GIA does not grade princess cuts as far as I know. AGS does have an ideal cut grade for princess stones. Take a look at Good Old Gold and WhiteFlash. They both carry excellent cut princess stones in-house and provide pictures. They are also PriceScope vendors and have excellent reputations on the forum.

Hmm, i when i check on diamondsonweb or sites like blue nile...the diamonds are gia certified and they do have a cut grade on it such as ideal, excellent, very good, etc...

That definitely doesn''t sound right. I would second the post recommending you to check GOG as their princess cut diamonds always seem to be beautiful. If you get an excellent cut you can definitely drop one or two specs on the color.

Mike, I believe what you're seeing is the vendor's own assigned cut grade, not the GIA's. As was noted earlier in the thread, I don't believe GIA has a cut grade for Princess stones. As far as I'm aware, only AGS has a cut grade for princess stones at the moment.

Hi, Mike: Everyone''s right - the only lab I''m aware of that assigns a cut grade on princess stones present is AGS.

What you''re likely seeing is the generic-term groupings that various sources may use.....somewhat like saying ''good, better, best.''.

Fancies are tricky; unlike round stones, the numbers really aren''t able to tell you if the stone is a top-performer. You really have to see the stones. A qualified independent appraiser (not a jeweler, but someone who doesn''t sell diamonds at all) would be the best option to help you pick a good stone.

One thing you might be able to get to help you narrow your choices is an ASET and/or Idealscope image. Those would help provide more information on the stone''s performance.

So i decided to go with a 1.51 E VS 2 princess cut diamond. Polish/Symmetry are ex/vg, table 71 dept 73.1, measurements being 6.22x6.17x4.51mm The jeweler gave me a price of 9700, i think i gotta a very good price on it...so excited!
