So my wife has wanted to upgrade from 2 carat to 4 for her bday. We had an appt today to view the earrings, but I was sick and sent her solo with my amex. To make a long story short, she came home with new earrings, I asked her to take them off to look at the diamonds. Both earrings had a visable black speck with the naked eye. You could not see this when the earrings were on her, but when taken off and put in your hand a foot from your eye, you can see them. Of course I flipped out and told her to take them back immediatly. Did I overreact? I just can not see spending $15k on earrings with visable black specks....

Hmmm...This is a hard call. Honestly, I don''t think you''re going to get top quality earrings for $15k in the 4ctw range, so you may have gotten a decent price. Considering their size, she should have a diamond cert for the stones. What are the specs on them?

I personally would rather have well cut stones than big ones, and can therefore understand your reaction. That being said, it doesn''t sound like a bad price for the stones unless they''re horrible.

Does your wife like the earrings?

$15k for 4ct. earrings.... you are going to see some inclusions.

She likes them, because they are big, lol. I do not have the specs in front of me, but I will get them. They look great to the naked eye, except for the black speck on each one.

Wait a sec. Does this mean your wife has 2 cts per earring now? Did she trade in the other ones and get these as an upgrade for $15,000? This sounds too cheap to me.

If your wife likes them, I guess that's what matters. If you can't really tell about the inclusions when she's wearing them, I guess it doesn't matter.

Yes, 2 carats each, up from one carat each. I paid $10,500 difference. The previous earrings I paid about $5k for several years ago, so figure I am into these new ones for about $15.5 total.

I just did a quick search, and the cheapest price I found was $19670 for 4.03ctw earrings in WG, with J colored stones and SI1 clarity. The cut on these was about average for princess cuts. So, if your wife is happy with her earrings (black spots and all) I say let her keep them. And, it sounds like she can always trade them in for other ones later if the spots bug her.

Then again, maybe you should go to the store and see what other options are available. You might even want to hit some estate/consignment shops to get more bang for the buck
