I bought this emerald from Dana at Mastercut Gems over the summer, and I'm looking for a pendant setting for it. It's the middle one in the pictures, I didn't buy the other stones. It's a somalia stone, no treatment. It's really a beautiful stone, very gorgeous green with some sparkle and shimmer. It has a glow to it and some presence for such a small stone. Very clean, almost no inclusions. The pic is accurate.

It's small, only 5 x 7.5, 1.08 carat. I'd like to have it be a delicate pendant, something in yellow gold. But it needs something to it, to give it some oomph.

Any ideas?

Or do you think I can get away with a three-stone ring? With two emerald cut white sapphires on either side? Maybe those would be 5 x 6.5 or something?

Don't have much of a budget for either one, but my birthday is a few months away, so this would be my gift.

Hi iLander :wavey:
The emerald is a beauty. Looks nice and clear with a glow to it. I am not much of a pendant person, so I will always say a ring because that is what I would wear. Plus I have a real love of antique jewelry so I would love to see that baby set with two other emerald cut diamonds in a deco-esque stunner. That's my two cents. Want me to find some diamonds? :naughty:

Happy soon to be Birthday to you.

Hi Treenbean! :wavey:

Thanks for the compliments. Not sure if I can afford the diamonds, but it can't hurt to look, right? :naughty:

Ooooh, Emerald!
My Favorite!

Yours is a beauty!

I have no ideas to bequeath you, but I do wish you a happy soon-birthday!

Oh very pretty!

My vote also goes for art deco ring, with two low coloured diamonds (J or lower) either side in a yellow gold setting.

Sorry that doesn't answer your question at all!

Are we talking custom or ready made? Accent diamonds or nothing?

The Emerald is lovely and I think would benefit from some accents to beef it up a bit but the colour looks lovely.

Ok my girl, you need to give me a budget! I have already priced out small emerald cut diamonds pricey. Some semi mounts on ebay, not so bad, made in China, but at least you could have it set and wear it.

WOW! Treenbean, you have some kind of skill, you really do! :appl:

It's gorgeous and cheap! That is definitely going on top of the list for a ring!

Now can you do that with a pendant, too? :naughty:

I am thinking I really SHOULD get a pendant, (mostly so TL and Chrono won't yell at me about a delicate emerald ring ).

I would like to do it cheaply, a couple hundred or so, and I don't think it needs a pile of accent diamonds, but I'm open. I'm thinking pretty subtle, just a little gleam on a shortish 17" chain that I have. I don't want to just stick in a plain prong setting, because it needs a titch more substance to it.

There was a line in Isabel Allende's "House of the Spirits: about a woman that had an emerald at the nape of her neck and it kind of inspired this quest.

:wavey: Thank you for the kind words, ooo-Shiney and Rosetta!

Okay will see what I come across in my internet travels but in the meantime I wanted to share with you two designs (both Tiffanys) that I adore for pendants. I've got a Tiffanyesque pendant very similar to the ruby version but with a Tanzanite and I love it!

LD you're just making me drool, now! :cheeky: :cheeky:

LOVE your pendant!

The Tiffany on the left looks like a Schlumberger (sp?) design, is it? Always loved his work . . . :appl:

iLander how about setting it into a diamond halo, and put a pearl enhancer on it, you can wear it with a strand of your new lovely pearls.

Don't worry, no yelling from me about having an emerald RHR because I'm about to do the same with mine. :halo: Prong set in high karat gold is my recommendation for an emerald, be it a ring or pendant. It's fine for a ring if you are careful and it's not an everyday wear ring. Your emerald might be small but it's very clean and the colour is bright. I second/third something off the shelf; either a Stuller or one of the eBay settings.

Very pretty emerald!! I love the simple ring setting with taper baguettes; that would be one of my top choices personally.

Hi LG! :wavey: That is a great idea! If the emerald was a little bigger, I would definitely do that. My Xmas pearls are 12mm, though, so I think that it would need a LOT of diamonds to get the size up to work with it, and I'm hoping for a less expensive pendant

Hi Chrono :wavey: Well, I feel a lot better! If you're doing a ring, it might not be a bad idea.

Hi Indy Lady :wavey: I agree, isn't Treenbean amazing? Always comes up with something! I like that idea, and am seriously considering it.

I saw this on Julie Kay Taylor's etsy site, what do we think of something like this? Kind of like a frame for the emerald? I would have to ask her to work out some kind of design for it (since obviously it wouldn't be exactly the same), anybody know how long that would take?

Any other gold "frame"-type settings out there?

Sorry for the fuzzy pic, it was pretty small.

@Vapid: Wow, you have a great memory! Thanks for the link!

@LG: Oh, boy. That puts it past my time frame. Love the pendant in the link, though.

Any other vendor suggestions? I like DanielM on etsy, has he done anything really "designy"? I would like something very unique, but subtle.

Maybe I should just give up and go with a framed prong-set slider type thing and be done with it.

No, Don't give up !!!
Look what DanielM did with MTG Tourmaline and Opal !!!
They made a beautiful pendant!
Maybe they could come up with an idea for you based on what you want,
I would write them asking for ideas....
Nothing ventured....

(Sometimes things are worth waiting for....
I have the JKT Pendant sitting on the Chrysanthemum on her site !!!
It is stunningly beautiful, and I actually gave her full rein with the idea,
I couldn't love it more. If that helps.....)
And my big Emerald is hopefully going into a pendant similar to the Amethyst one on her site.....
Of course, not until Fall of next year!

iLander, have you decided on YG? I have a tiny emerald-shaped diamond halo pendant that's pretty delicate, but it's in WG. I think your stone would look lovely in it. Plus, given the amount of blue in your stone, I think you could go either way. Do you have any additional photos of your emerald? I'd love to see more.

Greetings ILander,

First let me say that the gem you have looks great and really looks to be the best of the three in the picture. I also agree that the setting should be delicate as the stone isn't very large and you want the stone's glow to be the highlight of the piece.

The JKT Pendant you posted and VapidLapid linked to is a piece my wife and I are luckly to have. Julia is a great artist and wouldn't have a second thought of going back to her again. In fact we contacted her last week regarding creating a pair of earrings that would go with the pendant and were told that the earliest there might be a slot would be in the May/June time frame. This isn’t an issue for us (though getting a pair of matching stones is but that is another story) and if it isn’t for you I would consider her for your piece.

iLander - please try Sally from HeartofWater. Her craftsmen are true artisans and some of her creations are beautiful. I don't know what her waiting time is like but (from experience) she's much more reasonable that JKT but retains a high quality. I doubt very much whether her waiting time is as long. My pendant in my avatar was made by her to my design and is sensational with unrivalled craftsmanship.

Hope that helps.

@ ooo-shiney: Ok, I'll try to keep slogging with it. I'll see what ideas Daniel has, I'll search through CS too, to see what's there. He really should keep his past projects on his site, so people have more ideas.

@ cellentani: I think you're right, it could go white gold. There's just something so medieval about yellow gold with an emerald, though . . . If I do a diamond halo, the diamonds themselves would definitely be set in white, I agree.

@Sal from Cal: Gorgeous pendant! Does your wife know she's spoiled? :D If you're like my DH, I bet you tell her so, mine sure tells me! Unfortunately JKT timetable is too far past my birthday, it's into what I call the "dry, giftless months"

@ LD; I'm a little hesitant about Sally, did you have any trouble with shipping over there? That's what scares me a little . . .

Okay, here's another idea (LG :wavey: you'll love this):

What about a pearl halo pendant?

http://shop.kojimapearl.com/products/18k-yellow-gold-large-oval-faceted-tourmaline-with-chinese-fresh-water-pearl-ring

Is that medieval looking, or what? Sarah at Kojima would have to supply the teeny half-drilled seed pearls, and put me in contact with her jeweler, I wonder what he would charge me?

Less expensive ring

Does anyone think DanielM could pull a pearl halo off? Or is it just tacky?

Hi iLander :wavey: , I love those pearl halo rings, and they look really good in the buttery yellow gold, I really like this idea, it's different from the usual diamond halos. Do you like the pearl halo being squared off to fit the shape of your stone instead of curved?

Hi LG! :wavey:

Yup, totally a squared off version of this. I hope Sarah has pearls small enough, they would need to be like 2 mm! I think she would be able to half-drill them, don't you think? I'm thinking 3 across the top, 4-5 on each side. Of course, I would need my magnifying glass to appreciate this thing

She has some under 2 mm on this necklace, but they're not round: http://shop.kojimapearl.com/products/sweet-pearl-princess-necklace
