Hi everyone,
I’m having a hard time to pick the diamond for the engagement ring. I like both radiant and oval shape. I appreciate any comments on these two stones and help me to pick one.

far left is Radiant H color VS1 1.7 ct
And the middle one Oval 1.51 ct E color

thank you so much!
P/S I don’t think I can upload the video on here but here is the screenshot of it. 83370C13-F29C-47EC-A764-708CD3DF8D1E.jpeg

actually I just found a way to upload it. Please give me some advices! :)

Is the stone for you or for your significant other?

This is the stone for my future fiancée. I know people said it all depends on her preference but she likes both. She said radiant is modern look and oval is more traditional. That’s why I’m having a hard time to pick between those two.

I'm an oval lover....not sure what to tell you to help you decide between the two shapes. Think 10 years down the road what would you like
to look at on her finger?

What type of setting are you looking at?

I’m thinking about solitaire with hidden halo or pave with hidden halo. I know she doesn’t like the halo style but would be ok with hidden halo since it adds more special to the ring. I like the oval too. I just want to make sure she won’t be disappointed when she sees the ring.

Do you think those two are good cuts? They are just maybe $100-$300 different. Since not sure about the shape, I think I would pick the one has a better cut/light return instead.

My ratings are in that exact order.
Third-Second-First
Radiant. Least bright. Significantly yellow.
Smaller Oval. Arguably best performer.
Larger Oval. Not far behind in term of light return. Significantly larger.

We are comparing H vs E...

Then E Oval.
The radiant is average at best in term of light return
The oval is definitely above average.

I’m just looking at the radiant vs the smaller oval. The bigger oval is out of my budget, it has the same color and clarity with the smaller oval but it’s 1.75ct :) thank you for your comment. It definitely gives me the idea.

This is a second video of that 1.7ct radiant side by side with another 1.5ct radiant. I don't have a second video of the smaller oval

Here is how to assess light return for an elongated cut.
Along the width, you want to see broad light returnb as shown below. It is often butterfly-shaped (in red). Along the length (in blue), it is dead face up normally. Now rotate it, the blue areas should spark and respond and it does here.
Now radiants come in so many styles and some may not have good light return, but still a good radiant. It is distribution of light return, leakage and contrast that also matter.
The diamond I showed here is more sqaurish. The more elongaged, the more leakage you will see.
Hope this happens next time you reassess those diamonds.

See above post. One is more squarish and shows better light return. That is just how it is in general.

Thank you for all the information! One more question: the small oval has a medium blue. I’ve read some where on the Internet that said the fluorescence on higher color grade (F to D) will make the diamond appears hazy/milky. Does the small oval appear milky or hazy and how can I check it?

That's hard to tell from the video. A reputable vendor should be able to provide that assessment.
Otherwise, ask for couple VS2+ diamonds with no fluo, cloud, twinning wisps and graining, and compare side-by-side against the oval under different lighting conditions.

I like the oval the best of the 2 diamonds that you are considering. from the video it appears much crisper. its a very pretty shape and really nice proportions.

Thanks for all the tips! I emailed them yesterday and got a reply saying the medium blue doesn’t affect the performance of this diamond, that they wouldn’t sell any diamond that appears hazy or milky. ( they have them in the store, not like a broker).

Thanks for the comment. I’m glad that I’ve found a good one. :D
