Looking at diamonds on Blue Nile for an engagement ring. My girlfriend is petite and has small hands and fingers (size 4.5) so not sure if anything over 1.5ct will look ridicilous so should I just look for the highest clarity/color within my budget. I could get a 1.74ct G VS1 diamond or 1.54 F VS1 diamond for the same price. At what size typically does a diamond look gawdy on a small hand/finger.

Well, first off, I don't think a 1.5 or 1.7 will look "ridiculous" on a size 4.5 finger. I wear a size 5 ring, and a 1.55 RB.

Having said that, I don't think there will be a significant visual size difference between the 1.5 and the 1.7 on her finger, so if you would like to go for the higher color and higher clairty option then go for it.

Having said that, lol. I don't know that there will be a visual difference between the F or G color.

What is the cut quality on the two stones? I think that if you can afford a 1.5 or 1.7 F/G VS1 stone, then you should definitely make sure that the cut quaility is ideal/excellent as well, if the ones you are looking at are only "good" or "fair" or even "very good", consider upgrading the cut quality, at the same time you could go down to an eyeclean SI1 and still get a great carat size, color, clairty, and excellent cut.

I have some options- and also attached a pic of the 1.55 on size 5 finger...

Signature Ideal- 1.42- G- VS1

Ideal-G-SI1- 1.5

Ideal-F-SI1- 1.5

If I had a better idea of your budget, I could really narrow it down.

If you want a signature ideal- highest cut, you may be going down to a 1.4 range- keeping it to F-G VS1-SI1 and paying around 12-14,000

If you wanted an ideal- you have a lot of options at bluenile in the 1.5-1.6 range, keeping it to a F-G, VS1-SI1 and paying around 12-14,000

any ideas on settings? If you are looking to do a halo setting, you can definitely go with a slightly smaller stone- 1.3-1.4 and get EXCELLENT quality around, and still have a bigger size feel since the halo will pump up the size.

let me just say, the camera adds about 10lbs to my stone, lol 8)

Honestly though, people see my ring and comment how beautiful it is, beautiful stone, etc, but never once have I or anyone else I know thought it was gawdy. It's also a geographical perspective as well. If the women around you are all sporting stones under 1 ct, having a 1.75 may make her feel "showy" or stand out. Where I live 1-2-3 carat stones are quite standard depending on factors. My friends are all now just getting engaged (working about 4-5 years since graduating college) all buying condos, townshouses, homes, etc... and most of their (our) rings are .75-2.0 carats.

So that is something else to consider.

So many options, hope I can help!

EDIT: I just saw that your budget is 20K, I am assuming for the whole ring... the stones I posted are well under budget, even if you are going for a Tacori or Ritani or Leon Mege ring. You could even get one of these stones...

for me the shape also matters. i personally am not a big fan of round diamonds of that size. i would go for a square one (princess, cushhion etc.) that's not too high set. i think that would look really natural on a smaller hand, but still has the 'wow, what a rock'-effect. f or g wouldn't matter to me, size does :naughty:

Looks good but as BN Signature Ideal is sold as a H&A with associated premium, I would prefer to see a hearts image but BN does not provide those. If you do not mind paying for something that might not be there this should be fine.

it sounds good. I wasn't able to open the attachment. Try linking the internet address of the stone/web page to your thread. That will make it easier for people to see.

round? yawn... unless you get a great mounting!

Are you set on blue nile? I'm just not a fan plus I think they are over priced. I would recommend checking out other PS vendors to get better value and better customer service personally. Just me though.
