I need help looking for a parti sapphire for an engagement ring. First, I'm located in NYC and would love to see a stone in person, but it seems like it not that common here. If I do have to buy it online, does anyone have any recommendation for where I should buy it from and what I should look out for? I'm looking for 2-3 carat stone (round, princess, or trillion), not too dark, that preferably shows a blend of blue, green and yellow. Some of the pictures of parti sapphires I've seen online are really nice, but I'm afraid that's not how it actually looks in person. Any help appreciated!

Check out Bespoke Gems (Australian vendor), especially the Aussie Sapphires https://www.bespoke-gems.com/

Also, look at GemFix's Montana Sapphires - I particularly like this parti round though technically I'm not sure it has blue (make sure you choose HD setting when you view the video): https://gemfix.com/gems/sapphire-montana-12-723

Make sure there's a good return policy because color is tricky enough to judge in photos and videos and once you throw in parti colors, well, you'll want a chance to see it in your own hand before you can decide it is the one.

Good luck with your search!

eta: just thought of Prima Gems in NYC ... not particularly known for parti sapphires but they have some beautiful gems and good sources so maybe make an appointment and/or email them?

Consider GemsNY -- they have an actual brick-and-mortar store near you and they have a nice selection and nice on-line filter with a lot more options than most vendors. They are not cheap but I sourced a lower-end precision-cut stone from them and it was considerably nicer than the photos -- and that's the only time that's ever happened in my limited history with mail-order. Their on-line photos are pretty conservative. For some vendors, you can just tell -- every single photo is an explosion of color and you know it's all bogus (i.e., the "eBay Phenomenon"). They would not work with me on price (can I say that here?) but they seem to have a perpetual 20% off sale and the name changes to the upcoming holiday (maybe it's the Mother's Day sale now :twirl:). They were also pleasant enough to deal with by email.

Cut vs color is always the compromise and you're unlikely to get top-notch for both without spending an arm and a leg (but, hey, if you can afford NY...). But seeing them in person will really help you prioritize. I was always a color-centric/native-cut person (that would sound bad on any other forum) until I saw a precision-cut. Make sure you look at them near a window since some blues are spectacular in natural light and some are not. This is a wear-all-the-time ring so it "should" be attractive in all light.

Unsolicited advice: they may not have green/yellow since those color casts in a blue sapphire are considered undesirable. Are you sure you do not want a violet-blue, maybe? If you really want a teal-like sapphire, you could find some great bargains. There is a > 5 ct (!) unheated emerald-cut Australian one on the Natural Sapphire Company that is four figures -- but it looks a little dark. And if you really love teal, that place has some spendy alexandrites :twirl:.

I'm jealous -- I would love to poke around GemsNY! (I have no industry affiliation at all.)

You might want to reach out to Dana at Mastercut Gems or Jeff at Earth's Treasury. Both men are cutters and may have rough that is not listed that could be cut to the dimensions you are looking for. Here is a listing of parti color sapphires that are currently on Earth's Treasury. https://www.earthstreasury.com/prod...apphire-gemstones/?filter_color=parti-colored
When you view a parti colored sapphire in real life, the colors will appear more blended and less distinct than in photos. You may find videos and the advice from the vendor to be more helpful in online shopping

Era Gems also has some very nice teal-sapphire vintage rings since this just popped up on ever-helpful Facebook (?!)

Parti in round or trillion or out there but tend to be dark and the colors bleed together, remember any well cut gemstone the light enters one side of the table hits the pavilion then is angled to the the opposite side pavilion and then back up through the opposite side of the table, as it does this it picks up color. good parti sapphires are usually more emerald, princess, or cushion in shape to prevent light from picking up to much color. a yellow blue rough sapphire when cut in a round might show more green then blue. Please try to find bayoto or Brume jeroh on instagram or facebook. He is well known online seller from Nigeria

Thanks everyone for the help! I couldn't actually find anyone in NYC with any parti, so I ended up ordering one from Australia. They have a 30 day return policy. What do you guys think about this stone? I'm very unfamiliar with gemstones in general and don't know if there's anything I need to watch out for (like do I have to verify if it's real?), or is it just more of deciding whether I like the colors or not. Are the colors going to appear differently once it's set, or is this a pretty good indication of how it'll look? Thanks!

Folks tend toward the polite on here but I'm gonna be brutally honest (since you can return it) and say no on that one. It looks dark and undersaturated and olive green to me. Not sure how it would look high prong-set in direct sun but it looks like a "no" imo. Look at Era Gems for ideas (never bought from them but their photos look gorgeous).

I guess the most important thing -- and something that I sometimes underweight when I'm on the hunt -- is that it be beautiful. If you're just not sure that it's beautiful, then it probably isn't. I have a few of those -- they check all the boxes on paper but they're just not something that would make me -- or anyone -- say "ooh!" Big or little, as an e-ring you want this to be something you love looking at. Otherwise, might as well get a generic diamond, imo.

Now if it's actually way better IRL than those photos, then I take it all back!

Don’t worry, it will be real, they can’t make synthetic Parti colours.
And yes Australia will be the best source of them.
Check out Bespoke Gems in Sydney, Australia, the guy, Doug, cuts them himself and they are top class gems.
He has some really lovely looking ones.

Highly recommend Doug from Bespoke Gems. I bought a lovely sapphire from him. It's one of my favourites! Mine is not parti but his cutting is top notch.

I love this little guy (no actual experience with the vendor however...)

This thread is before you joined PS, but it's one of the examples of why Planetary Gems hasn't gained favor here:

@Tofufa I'll ditto the suggestions that you contact Dana Reynolds (Mastercut Gems) in North Carolina & Doug Menadue (Bespoke Gems) in Australia. Best of luck!!
