EDIT: $3500, not $35 [emoji52]

Hello everyone! I need your help. I'm looking to wife up my lady friend and get the best value at the same time. We went looking locally, which gave me an idea of what to get, but I know this community can help me beat the pants off the B&M.

I managed to snap a picture of the setting (with a .80 CZ at the center) that I'm looking to replicate. It is a Zeghani Halo setting in 14K Rose Gold with the milgrain detail. edit: The setting in the picture includes diamonds totaling around .48 ctw.

Here is a picture from the local shop's website:

a2a06b01404e35f55439c882148d8a66.jpg

So my request is two-fold: I need a copycat setting (the local is asking $2,150) and the perfect stone. The setting in-store will accommodate 6mm in width. Looking for something eye-clean, for sure. I am willing to spend a little as long as I'm getting the bang for my buck. Help me out PS fam!

Okay. Is that yellow gold or rose gold?

It's 14k Rose Gold. I'm not opposed to a setting that uses CZ/Moissanite, as long as it fits and would look okay with the center stone, if there was an option along those lines.

I'm pretty sure that setting by itself costs almost your entire budget.

It's going to be hard to match in your budget.
Here are some that are in the ballpark:

http://www.beverleyk.com/halo/r9412-a-d-d-cz.html Best setting for your budget. But the design isn't that close. Pearlmans carries Beverly K.
https://www.gabrielny.com/engagement-ring/ER7278W44JJ Closer in design. Call IDJ for the setting.

Your alternative is to ask David Klass for a custom quote. See if he can do it for 1600. If he can, then do that.

Only two stones that are under 1800 and eyeclean and at least 70 points in your budget that I found are these:
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.70-carat-j-color-vs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2032295
or this one: https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.70-carat-j-color-vs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-

You may need to up the budget. Pick a different setting. Or go for a smaller center stone.

Something is going to have to give.

Good find on the setting! That at least sets a ceiling on negotiations with the local if I opted to have them set an outside stone. I'll look into the Klass option.

I would be willing to up the budget to the $4000-4250 range, particularly if I was able to accomplish significantly more in regards to the center stone. In theory, I'd like to do a little better on the color, although my understanding is that a halo setting (and rose gold) would hide a little bit of that.

Re: Need help: .70-.80 RB + similar setting to this for $350

Yeah. A J in rose gold is going to be fine. And you don't need to go up in size. 80 points will only get your .3mm in size. The halo will obscure that. So it's not money well spent. A 70 point and an 80 point stone are going to look much the same in that setting.

I understand your concerns. But the fact is, the setting is going to be the biggest money sucker. I would start by getting a quote from David Klass, right now, for a custom setting like that one, but with a 70 (5.7mm) stone. Send him an email.

Next step is negotiating the price on the original setting with them.

See which setting is most cost effective.

I'll see if I can buy you an I color. IF I find it though, you should BUY IT NOW, because it probably won't be around later. And it will give you a 'safety' stone for comparison with anything the local guy gets you. If the local guy finds something as nice for you, then you can return it.

Here are the parameters you need to give the jeweler for the stone:
Table: less than 60
Depth: 59-62.3
Pavilion: 40.6-40.9
Crown: 33.5-35
Girdle should not be very thin or very thick.

If this one isn't showing any negative effects from the fluorescence this is a nice stone: http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD07314492?click_id=75797297 Put it on hold ask for an image and for the stone to be examined for milky or haziness by a gemologist. It's the best I in terms of price.

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD07567210?click_id=282109101 This one is nice too. A little more expensive.

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.70-carat-i-color-vs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2024854 Most expensive.

Judging by the shipping estimates on the blue nile stones (October 8-ish), it would seem they're virtuals. I'm guessing that means I won't be able to get someone to take a look at it in person? Or maybe that's not really that long and my logic is flawed. I'll see what I can find out.

I second Gypsy's suggestion above since that setting is very similar to the one you know she loves. IDJ can also source you a spectacular diamond. They have access to all virtual inventory, their pricing is super competitive and they work their megic with budgets! Plus they usually have fast turnaround times (though you should most definitely keep in mind the upcoming Jewish holidays). Call and speak to Yekutiel and talk to him about what you want. :wavey:

Just got done with BN and that stone has no cloudy or oily effects from the fluorescence, so that's good. I've got it on a 48 hour hold while I consider the other options. I reached out to David Klass by email (maybe i have the wrong address?) yesterday, but haven't heard anything back from him yet.

Re: Need help: .70-.80 RB + similar setting to this for $350

Given your budget, I would get an eyeclean Si 1 or Si 2 clarity diamond, as at 0.7 to 0.8 carat, even VS2 will most likely be overkill. If you really want to be safe, you can go VS2 or eyeclean Si 1 to Si 2. No reason to go above H, or really even I, given you are getting a round brilliant with an ideal cut. I'm trying to maximize your budget with I color and eyeclean Si1-Si2 with an ideal cut and 0.7-0.8 carat.

I'm trying to be at ~3200$ before tax and appraisal and maybe some miscellaneous fees.
1600$ for setting, so trying to find a good stone that isn't overkill on clarity or color, and not compromising on cut, for ~1600$
This is what I found. Also, I'm staying away from medium/high fluorescence and staying at least I color on a GIA scale, as some women have a stigma of owning a J stone, and medium/high fluorescence hurts resale of the stone and has to be checked for haziness and also carries a stigma for some. Since I don't know whether or not your significant other has a preference on these stigmas, I removed the stones I found with those properties. I also removed other stones I found that the clarity plot was a 100% dealkiller without even seeing the stone. I attached the stones I would pursue getting images of, and checking to see if the inclusions affect the transparency or integrity of the stones. And with these stones, the you will need to check with the vendor to make sure they are eye clean.

If you really want a "mind clean" stone, you can go with a VS2 eyeclean stone.

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD07527225
http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD05956237
http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD07219076
http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD07542229
http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD07510400

The first one I had mentioned would be my top choice at $1,604 if it is eyeclean and the inclusions don't affect the transparency and I got an image of it. It is an Si stone, so checking for black inclusions, centered inclusions under the table, tint, and if inclusions affect the transparency or integrity of the stone are important considerations. All the information you need could be solved with getting a picture of the stone and having a gemologist do an assessment of it.

I just noticed the diamond you have on hold has a crown angle of 32 degrees which seems too shallow, not sure if I'm looking at the wrong stone http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD07314492

I found a G VS2 60/60 stone that you might like to consider and faces up quite big. B2C can usually provide idealscope/aset

In your opinion, what's an acceptable angle? What affect would the 32 degree have on the look of the stone?

Less fire. Also it is a chipping risk.

Stick to 33.5-35. No thin girdles or very thick ones either.

David Klass gave me a great quote on the setting for about $1500, which I'll try to negotiate down the local jeweler with if I can. Love his work, but he says it will take 30-35 days. Not a deal breaker, but not ideal either.

Was able to get idealscope/ASET image for this one.

I'm not a fan. It's an acceptable stone. But I personally would rather have a higher crown so that the stone shows fire and life. This one is going to favor white light over color and not be very fiery.

Re: Need help: .70-.80 RB + similar setting to this for $350

It's a 1B American ideal cut due to 33 degree crown angle and 13% crown height. Both out of the range of a super ideal stone and will decrease dispersion (fire) of the stone. This is really close to those top parameters without paying a huge premium. However, if they are charging you the price of a super ideal stone for this one, you would be getting ripped off. This stone is awesome and anyone who doesn't have a predisposition for super ideal cuts would love it! Good job.

I looked at some other prices of G VS2 excellent cut with some good parameters and that price you found is a great price.

Re: Need help: .70-.80 RB + similar setting to this for $350

Personally, I would rather David Klass make my setting than a local jeweler.

I think the G VS2 is very good value if you are happy with a bright, but less fiery stone. Many people like a brighter stone. It is still a GIA triple ex, with a decent idealscope and scores well on HCA. It is by no means a dud, just not super ideal/Pricescope standards.

If you want more safe and ideal proportions, here are some recommendations. You could ask for more images and compare them.
http://www.b2cjewels.com/dd-8214749-0.70-carat-Round-diamond-I-color-VS1-clarity.aspx
http://www.b2cjewels.com/dd-8723262-0.70-carat-Round-diamond-I-color-VS1-clarity.aspx
http://www.b2cjewels.com/dd-8389174-0.70-carat-Round-diamond-I-color-VS1-clarity.aspx

Can be ideal if you have an idealscope/ASET (35.5 and 40.6 are compatible)

Re: Need help: .70-.80 RB + similar setting to this for $350

Does it have to be bluenile?

if it does, you want to probably look at this:
http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD07504490

grade inclusion is twinning wisp which is great. HCA score 2. Proportions not on the "pricescope ideal" chart, but still okay. And on budget at $1815 and better color than the I you had picked for same price.

The grade setting inclusion on this is a cloud, so the gemologist needs to review it to confirm that doesn't cause transparency issues:
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.70-carat-h-color-si1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2085244 for $2070.

There's a ring currently listed for $2200 on LoupeTroop (seller is a PSer) with a .74 ct, J SI1 Crafted by Infinity diamond. I happen to love the semi-bezel setting, so the thought of dismantling the ring kinda pains me & it may strike you as weird to purchase a ring when you only want the stone, but the diamond is very well cut & she might be amenable to a slightly lower offer:
https://loupetroop.com/listings/rings-natural-diamond-center/dot-74-cbi-semi-bezel-diamond-ring-size-6

And if you buy the ring, it will no longer be tempting me! ;))
