NEED EXPERT ADVISE PRINCESS CUT!!!

i am a new member and so glad i found this site

i am actively looking for a loose princess cut and so far there are two stones that i like. please let me know which has the best cut .
1st stone......
PRINCESS 2.1 CT. H color SI1 clarity (EGL USA NEW YORK certified)

just a thought.... could this be same diamond but priced differently?

it is the same diamond. you should know that egl european has been known to be ''soft'' in their grading, meaning if this stone were graded by gia or ags it might be as much as two grades lower. this is not always the case, but it is something to be aware of.

Usually a high crown height is necessary for more fire, and a large table gives the illusion of a bigger stone (but a large table does not mean necessarily mean that it will actuallly face up bigger.)

Not sure which one you mean by high table.

I think you need a lot more info.

1. In a princess with a 67% table and a 17% crown height. you need to know about the crown angle. While it is a guess, I think the crown angle would be WAY TOO steep in this stone, given the table size and the crown height.

2. Buying a princess cut and assuming it will return light well based on relying proportional numbers primarilly is not a good thing to do, especially when looking at a purchase of this size.

3. There are other very important attributes in a princess cut that are a consideraton as well. A princess cut with an SI clarity grade necessitates know where and what the inclusions are in the stone.

To find out if the stones are the same ask the seller for copies of the grading report. If the report numbers match it is the same stone.

i agree Roc - it will be up in the 48 plus 40 degree range for the 2 crown facets.

And a large H or maybe I with no blue fluoro princess will not face up colorless

thanks a lot for the replies. i ended up not buying the stone. btw, in a princess SI clarity why is it necessary to know the nature of the inclusion and where it is located... is this more important on a princess?

Aquarius4u,

A princess cut''s four pointed corners are susceptible to chipping. With SI1 clarity you would want to make sure there isn''t a feather at, or very near, one of the corners. That said, a lot depends on the size and extent of the feather.

Another thing to watch out for are girdles that are too thin -- again for the same chipping susceptibility. The best advice I can give is to have a trusted professional examine the stone prior to purchase.

They are very different looks... but from your earlier comments about size I will say that you get a LOT of bang for buck with Pears. Princesses are HOT right now. Pears and ovals aren't so they are priced very nicely... and princesses do not have anywhere near the spread a pear, oval, or round would. At two carats a any of those would look a third bigger than a 2 carat princess or same cut quality (didn't say that well... what I meant was that a 2 carat pear looks like a 2.5 carat princess or larger in terms of MM size). Personally I am a HUGE fan of east-west set ovals with LW ratios of less than 1.3 and fat spready pears-- they look HUGE. And are just as sparkly as princesses....

Is there a reason you jumped from princesses to pears? It is true that princesses are hard to shop for online... although with the new AGS 0 rating it's getting a little easier...

actually i like both princess and pear. just so happened that at that particular search i stumbled on that princess cut which i think is good for the money based on the description.
btw, thanks a lot for the input. i do like bigger diamonds with a lot of sparkle, eye clean, and on the white side. and to answer your question there are a lot of princess cut availabe online compared to pears.

Ahh... okay, well that makes sense now.

Personally... I would just ask folks that have them where they got them and what vendors they suggest you ask about them.

For example... ERD has the some incredible cushions, GOG (aside from amazing cuts others don't carry) has fabulous step cuts-- particularly asschers... and Whiteflash does stunning RBs. I'm sure if you posted about vendors likely to carry the most selection of them youd get many helpful hints. Also, you know many of the vendors online have access to tons of stones not posted on their sites. It might be worth it for you to call someone like Jon at GOG or Mark at ERD and work with them... tell them what you want, what budget you have to work with and just have them look for you and see what they turn up. Not that I'm telling you to go with a pear... it's just that the spread thing is very hard to overlook and for me it edges the pear way ahead of the princess.

ETA: GOG doesn't have an option to search for pears... so, probably not the best vendor to contact for those...lol.
