Greetings,

I am totally new to the whole concept of purchasing diamonds - this is my first attempt besides a few smaller pieces of jewellery with diamonds bought in stores. So I figured I would ask for some advice and guidance in here. Please bear with my lack of diamond knowledge! :)

What I am looking for is a ~1 ct round diamond for a 14k white gold solitaire ring. Preferably I colour or better.

I have mostly been looking on Bluenile's site due to the fact that is able to calculate taxes etc when shipping to Denmark, where I live. Denmark has a VAT of 25 %.

After having also looked at sites like White Flash and James Allen, it seems like Bluenile lacks important charts like Ideal-scope and ASET. Is it even possible to find a good diamond on Bluenile without those charts to compare the diamonds? Can I rely solely on the cut proportions and HCA score?

So far I've found this one that I like, which is a 1.02 c, I IF with a HCA score of 1.2: https://www.bluenile.com/dk/diamond-details/LD14035055?refTab=DIAMONDS&track=viewDiamondDetails

Is that a good diamond in your opinion and if no, why not? I would also love to see suggestions on better alternatives. My budget is around 6.500$ (25 % VAT incl.)

Thanks in advance for your help it will be much appreciated!

Looks like you’ve been doing your homework. You found a good one IMHO. Lots of people will tell you there’s no reason to pay for IF clarity unless for cultural reasons. If you went down to VS1 you could perhaps go up in color.

Here’s an H VS1 with PS quality proportions. https://www.bluenile.com/dk/diamond-details/LD12515173?refTab=DIAMONDS&track=viewDiamondDetails

You should be able to request advanced images from Blue Nile.

Thanks alot for your reply MWAnderson!

I tried to ask Blue Nile if they had any advanced images of the diamond, but they said they didnt have. Where does that leaves me? Is it a no go then or would you consider it worth the purchase? Should I consider using White Flash or James Allen instead so that I can get an Idealscope and ASET image of the diamond before purchasing?

That diamond you linked seems to have some inclusions in the center of the diamond. Is that a problem or is it still considered eye clean? Also that diamond costs roughly 1.400$ more than the one I have found. Am I going with too low a budget for the ct size im trying to find?

I do like the BN stone you found. But I would feel safer suggesting a seller you can get images from. Especially since you are buying out of country. Here are two stones which should be eye clean. These are owned by the sellers so they can actually look at them, send videos etc. Your budget seems to be just enough to find a couple of stellar choices but VAT fees may change that. Both of these sellers have some of the best upgraded policies and customer service as well.

To me the I color with internally flawless doesn’t make sense, just as @mwilliamanderson mentioned someone would.
You have so much room to work with on going down in clarity and still have a very clean stone. You can see the warmth of the stone but maybe knowing the high clarity is more meaningful/desirable.
When people see the ring, they will just see the color. While they will have no idea of the clarity, I would suspect they will not think it is internally flawless based on the color.
(Obviously color is very important to me so that’s the perspective I’m coming from!)

I hear what you are saying and the help is much appreciated - trust me! - but the suggested diamonds (the 1.068 ct I VS2 and the 1.10 ct H SI2 diamond) will have me at roughly 8500$ when the Danish VAT of 25% is added.

I dont really mind getting a stone with less clarity and better colour, but I am having troubles finding suitable ones within my prefered budget range of 6500$. It seems that even if im willing to trade down clarity I will still be finding I colour.

If we compare the 1.04 ct H VS1 (https://www.bluenile.com/dk/diamond-details/LD12515173?refTab=DIAMONDS&track=viewDiamondDetails) to the 1.02 ct I IF (https://www.bluenile.com/dk/diamond-details/LD14035055?refTab=DIAMONDS&track=viewDiamondDetails) then the price difference is roughly 1500$. Is that really worth the extra money?

I can see the color in the picture but you will rarely notice it in real life, and it is another matter entirely whether that color bothers you and if it is worth it to you to pay more for a higher color.

would the tax cost be less if purchasing from a European county? or even your neighbor Finland?

Only you can decide what’s worth the money. I was bothered by the tint in my I colored stone and recently upgraded but many aren’t.

I am concerned that you can’t get images and I personally wouldn’t take the risk but you may feel otherwise. I found two other options at Whiteflash that may fit into your budget better but they are under the 1 carat you are looking for. I think you may have to lower your expectations somewhat to stay on budget when paying that hefty VAT. Cut quality is the one thing I wouldn’t sacrifice however. The first is an ACA and the 2nd is a Premium Select. Both come with a great upgrade plan of only $1 dollar more so you could upgrade size and/or color on a significant future date.
