BF and I have found a diamond we like on Bluenile. We''ve found a setting from an independent jeweler who said he will apprasie the diamond for us for $65 and will provide a free apprasial after the stone is set. He''s also willing to set the stone we get online. He''s a certified GIA gemologist who has been doing this for awhile. Another jeweler we talked to said he''d be wary of a jeweler who will set a loose stone in one of their own settings when the stone has not been purchased from them. Should we try the first jeweler or go for an independent apprasier?

I’m not understanding the question. Jeweler A has a mounting you like and has agreed to set it for you. Good. Ask about breakage liability during the setting process because this is sometimes a sticking point but so far this sounds like good news. Jeweler B seems to think that’s a bad idea but doesn’t have a counteroffer or anything to back this claim up with so really they have nothing to do with it. Thank them for their time and you're done with them. Neither one of them is an independent appraiser. What are you hoping to learn from the $65 appraisal?

Why not just mount it and then send it to an independent appraiser? As Neil said, the jeweler is not an independent appraiser.

Before we mount it we want to make sure it is the same stone as BN has promised us it would be. Basically we want a varification of the AGS stats. Then after it''s mounted we''d have to appraise it again and the jeweler who is selling us the setting would do the second apprasial. However he''s selling us the setting so he is not independent. THe 2nd jeweler really doesn''t have a lot to do with it I guess.

Well, what I think is the jeweler will have to verify it himself anyway that the stone is what you think you give him or he will be liable for fraud or lost of the stone if the independent appraiser found that the stone in the setting is not the same as stated in the grading report. You don't need to pay for a written appraisal for that.

If you are unsure, get an independant appraisal on the loose diamond, have it set by the chap you like then get the appraiser to give the ring a final check to verify the ring as a whole. I think an independant appraisal would give you peace of mind. Do check if the jeweller will cover the diamond in case of damage or loss whilst setting.

Appraisers listing that you can use to find an independant one in your area.

We had also toyed with the idea of getting the loose diamond appraised by the jeweler and then after he sets it get it independently appraised to make sure the setting AND stone are all good.

If you get an appraiser to look at the loose diamond and appraise it, they might be willing if you explain to inspect the diamond and ring once completed for you to check everything is in order.

So you''re saying have the independent appraiser apprasie both the diamond loose and when it is mounted?

Yes, tell the appraiser the plan - then if he is agreeable get him to appraise the loose diamond, then once it is mounted get him to inspect the completed ring and the diamond to make sure everything is ok. He won't need to appraise the diamond again once set, just inspect it to verify it and that the diamond wasn't damaged during the process ( this is rare).

Any jeweler should verify this before they set your stone. Clearly, they do NOT want to take a stone that is supposed to match the report, and then after it is set, have it turn out to not match.
