The one we have now is a 7 year old Kenmore Elite. It's been acting up for the last 3 years (wouldn't drain during the final spin cycle) and has finally died. Do you have a washing machine that you're happy with and can recommend? TIA :wavey:

No, but have one I hate. I don't even know the brand but I do know it's a top loading HE model. I think it's GE, actually. It is one that doesn't have the center agitator thingy. We rent and it came with the house, otherwise it would be gone. In the condo I own there is a GE top loader that isn't HE (and has an agitator) and it is 10x better than this one.

ETA- My friends have an LG Washer/Dryer. They "talk" to each other so the dryer knows what to do based on the washer's settings.

I can't remember what it is called but I have the washer/ dryer that is all in one machine and I love it! We have kids so I do at least 8-10 loads per week. it is so amazing to not have to change it over. :appl:

Kenmore front loader.
14 years and still going strong.

Love my almost two year old LG front load with allergiene and sanitary cycles. Weighs the clothes to determine water level. Makes my clothes SUPER clean, ESP the whites. Can't tell you enough how great it is!

Here's a link to ours.

I am in love with it. We ended up with a limited edition color and took the floor models which reduced the price some. What I love on it:
I can adjust the temperature, load size, and delicacy level quite easily. It has a compartment specifically for the detergent, so it can release it at the right time. It is self balancing, so I can just throw a load in. It is energy efficient, and runs on about $10.00 a year. Even more though, it is so QUIET! I can't usually hear it even with the laundry room door open. It has great capacity too!

Mine is Fisher + Paykel & I am crazy about it. It's a unique design: essentially a front-loader turned on its side so you load it from the top. Nobody else makes one like it -- cleans fantastically, is very quiet (sounds like Starship Enterprise taking off when it spins -- my dogs & cats were fascinated at first). No bending to load or unload, no need for those crazy podium things, no moisture trouble in the drum -- all the advantages of a top-loader with the works of a front-loader.

It senses by itself how much water to use, so you never waste any; it also senses weight of the load & adjusts spin to that -- has a bunch of cycles you can program, of course. It balances itself -- and if it is really in a pinch & can't, it calls you to come help.

I can't say enough good about it. More expensive than some, but worth every penny!

I have an LG front loader and I can't stand it. I feel like it constantly needs to be cleaned with vinegar on the cleaning cycle or it smells. The bleach and fabric softener trays don't drain either so they always get moldy and I'm constantly having to clean those with bleach. I don't know if this is something you have to deal with on all front loaders but I really don't think I'll ever buy another one. Also our LG dryer keeps telling me the filter needs to be cleaned but I clean the lint off of it after every single use. I can see fuzz way down in there but I have no clue how to get it out. I'm definitely not happy with the set I have so my advice is to avoid buying LG. But maybe that's just been my experience...

I adore my Samsung front loader. My laundry room is upstairs and it's pretty darn quiet. I've only had it for 5 years, but no problems at all!

I like ours too and love the color of ours-red! Pretty. Only thing I hate about the front loaders is that they can get mildewy smelling so we keep ours open part of the way which I don't love but at least it keeps it smelling OK.

ETA: Stargurl just read your experience with the front loaders and yes it is a problem with most of them I think. I hate that too! We run that discy thing in it every month to keep stuff fresh smelling but what a pain.

I have a Samsung front loader too. It's about 5 - 6 years old and haven't had any problems with it. It's very quiet and my laundry always looks clean and smells good. It's supposed to only use what detergent, fabric softener and water it needs based on the weight of the load. It also has a cycle that uses silver ions for disinfecting and I use that all the time on sheets, towels and undies. My only complaint is that a normal load of laundry takes almost an hour. That may be true of all HE washers but I notice it on this one because it has a clock on it.

I saw ads for the LG with the steam right after I bought my Samsung and I'm envious.

Whirlpool Duet Sport, front load w/d, bought in 2007 from costco. Still going strong. Dryer def works better if you keep the lint vent/air tunnel (i don't know what that's called) cleaned out. Our "lint air tunnel" is approx 17 ft long so we have to have it professionally blown out once a year. Ugh.

I no longer live with mine, although there is no question that I own it. My father bought it for my husband and me and it is in our house in Virginia. (I live in my father's house in Connecticut with him and with my daughter.) Mine is a Bosch and it is fantastic. I loved it. After reading absolutely everything in Consumer Reports, I decided to get that one because all the best reviewed ones by Consumer Reports were hated by most of their owners.

I highly recommend the Bosch, although it is pricey. I also recommend that you go on living with it after you buy it.

Yes, my 26 yrs old Maytag top loader without high tech gadgets... still going strong :!:

I have no smelly problems, I wipe the door after I'm done and leave it open half an hour. I put it on clean cycle with some product every two months, I only use pods of detergent. No lint problems either.

I have about a 20 year old Maytag small washer with dryer stacked on top that I came with the house and I have used for about 14 years. I had to replace the water valve a few years ago (the original finally died), the dryer drive belt and drum bearings at about the same time (if I had to take the drum out to change the belt I might as well change the bearings). No problem getting parts for it (perhaps a couple hundred dollars for all parts).

Very very satisfied.

+1
Have a Bosch and love it. 500 series.
Did extensive research and they suggested Samsung or Bosch. I think the F+P one is highly rated too but non sell in my area so I didn't look heavily into it.

Kenmore is now made by LG, so there is essentially no difference in the quality of those products

Suggestions for those having smell problems:
- Leave doors/trays open (the only time mine are closed is when the washer is in use)
- Use less detergent/FS (if your buying the HE stuff, you only need 2 tbsp max, unless its a large/really dirty load)

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this thread! My washing machine began working again, so I put off purchasing a new one. But it's done, for good this time, so I'm resuming my hunt for the new one...

I had no idea that such a thing existed! I have two young boys and do a ton of laundry as well.

Thanks, kenny. Kenmore seems to have a really good reputation. I think I'm going to avoid front loaders because of mold/odor issues.

Thanks, amc80! It's helpful to know what to avoid, as well.

OK, it sounds like Samsung might be the right choice. Missy, iluvshinythings, and ericad: do you happen to know what samsung model you have or how many cubic feet it holds? Thank you!

We LOVE Electrolux!

We use ours LOTS -- I counted one week as I ran laundry through and found that we do 20-29 loads of laundry per week

This washer has a large capacity (which is usually filled!) and lots of settings so you can adjust how you like very easily. We had a very brief problem with smell... I may have ignored the reminders to clean and let it go for 6+ months with no clean cycle
Fixed quickly. No problems since even though I only run a "clean" cycle every 2-3 months (not every 100 loads as reminded by the machine).
Lasted 3 years (3 1/2?) so far with that amount of use and still going strong :appl:

Front load is so amazing! I thought I didn't mind top load until I tried this! Our clothes are much cleaner with less water used.

If you get a front loader, GET THE PEDESTAL! That is the only regret I have with our machine. I really wish we'd paid the extra $100 and gotten the pedestal so the delivery guys could have put it up there.

Fwiw, I have Kenmore/LG front loading and love it. I bought them almost ten years ago, when my boys were young and messy, and I bought the large capacity to handle quilts/sleeping bags...you know, the big stuff that typically requires a trip to a laundromat. It has all the sensors to know how much water to use, it scolds me if I put in too much soap, and is so quiet that I don't know when its on. The downside is that if I forget and leave the door closed without airing it out first, it does get skanky smelling - remedied by opening the door and airing it out or an occasional wiping out, but still... :nono:
