If you like naps, take them.
If you don't, don't.

People vary.

How do people get into a frame of mind that there is one right way, and it applies to everyone?
This is not pointed an any individual here, just a general comment.

Kenny, how is it you can apply your usual "people vary" comments to NAPS? Isn't this about as laid back a topic as you can get????

I am a napping advocate! I love napping, sleeping, snoozing - whatever it is you want to call it. There is something that feels so good about crawling into my nice bed and just passing out.

Yea. I love naps. Nothing is better on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon than reading a book and dozing off for an hour or so.

Laid back? Hahaha. Good one, since we're talking about naps.

Well, for instance... you wrote, "A nap is just that...a nap. It should be short in duration. Otherwise you're simply sleeping when the sun is out!"

Some people may want a long nap.
That is their right.
Who are you to dictate how long other people's naps should be?
Some people see nothing wrong with "sleeping when the sun it out".

If you feel that way for yourself, fine, no problem - but words like "should and you're" means this statement is directed at others and is intolerance for variation between people.

Not looking to start a fight.
Just pointing out how easily language can be used to enforce this there is ONE right way thinking.

Kenny, you're a nutter. I say that affectionately.

I'm not saying people SHOULD take short naps or long naps. I'm defining what a NAP is.

From the dictionary:

A brief sleep, often during the day.
intr.v. napped, nap·ping, naps
1. To sleep for a brief period, often during the day; doze.

Now, am I going to have to define "brief" too? For God's sake, I wasn't saying that one is right, the other wrong, or anything like it. I was saying a NAP is SHORT. If you are sleeping for HOURS, it's not a NAP. It's SLEEPING DURING THE DAY, which for the record I LOVE TO DO.

I am not being INTOLERANT of people's bloody naps! ::)

One thing I like about not working anymore is the ability to decide myself what's important to do in a day -- & not having to pack days full as a can of sardines. Since high school I've gotten terminally sleepy between 1 & 3 pm. Torture at work but I grabbed little naps at lunchtime. Now, if I feel like nodding off for an hour or so, I do it without guilt or apology. Like my grandmother, I wake up bright & ready to go at 4 a.m. almost every day, by 9 have tons done, so hitting the couch in the aft is my bonus.

I LOVE NAPS! When I worked, I used to come home around 520, eat, then watch TV and sometimes nap from 7-8 or 7-9 then wake up and stay up until midnight. I have no problem sleeping at night, so my naps don't stop me from still going to bed at my normal time. Now that I am not working, I can sleep in late and don't want/need naps. However, I HATE taking naps when there is stuff going on. For example, I hated it when I was a teenager - on weekends. I felt like I was supposed to be doing something exciting and fun, why waste it on sleeping!? I still don't really do it on weekends, for the same reason... I am weird.

I have just now woken up from a happy little nap myself! (Then again, I had knee surgery at 6:15 this morning, so that my have played a part... :cheeky: ) Seriously though I firmly believe in an afternoon siesta! As a matter of fact, I may just take another one right now to make sure I haven't lost the knack of it, since the last one ended all of half an hour ago.

I can't imagine why anyone would care if someone decides to nap... or not. I'm pretty sure there are more things in the world to worry about.

Great insight! You should probably go worry about more important things and leave all the dumb stuff like napping and diamonds to us dummies!

 I'm just saying that anyone that gives a shit about someone else NAPPING needs a reality check.

I mean, you DID ask for any and all thoughts right? That's my thought on it. I'd rather worry about the big issues in life instead of how a family member naps or cuts their toenails.

Nay for me personally - whenever I can actually fall asleep for a nap, I always wake up feeling more groggy than when I went to sleep.

I don't have problems with others napping though! I wish I could take naps and wake up feeling refreshed.

eta: To answer Haven's question, I just get tired and go to bed very early, sadly.

Is there a list or wiki page somewhere? I'd like to see the approved list of topics that we are allowed to give a poop about. TIA!

My natural inclination is to nap, but I have to fight it. I take ages to fall asleep, then I fall into something closer to a coma. It will last for a minimum of three hours. If I'm woken up (or set the alarm) I feel awful for the rest of the day, like I have a hangover or something. If I'm left to sleep, I will sleep until, well forever. I once lost a day... :-o

Thanks for the reality check-you're TOTALLY right. I've been wasting SO MUCH TIME all these years having conversations about things that don't matter. We could have peace in the Middle East by now if only me and my family and friends had only focused on discussing that!

Still bitter about that one, eh? If you still give a shit about a thread from several years ago on an internet forum, I guess I'm not the only one needing a reality check! :wavey:

Snort. Please never say this again kenny. Or maybe just make it your signature? It would save typing and/or copy and pasting time.

I do too, thing, if I nap for too long. I think the magic number is 30 minutes, sometimes 45. Any longer and I'm out of it for the rest of the day with a dull headache.

Do you get the funny taste in your mouth? After a nap, nothing tastes right to me!

I'm a nap supporter, but I can't nap myself. Naps of any duration leave me feeling groggy and disoriented - so I only nap if I'm sick.

I think at times there can be too much napping - My mom is dealing with depression, ADHD, anxiety etc. and recently spends almost every non-working hour napping. I worry about her !
