just a typical day here...Never a dull moment. If anyone out there does not have a farm you need to get one right away.
Want to buy mine???!

OMG Jimmianne! I am guessing you and anyone else involved is OK by your humorous post but thank goodness! WOW PSers live exciting and daring lives lol. Lawn mowers catching on fire, people breaking limbs, people not wearing sunscreen. The list goes on and on haha. Seriously I am relieved you are fine. What the heck happened?

Oh and do you have a lot of farm animals? I especially love pigs. So darn cute!

Uh oh! My dad just got a zero-turn mower and he loves it, but he keep saying, "most accidents happen to men over 60 on these things." I'm like, dad maybe because most people who buy those are men over 60, hello! I hope you're ok, Jimmianne.

I digress. I have the worst luck with weedeaters. I am always breaking the string, running out of gas mix, breaking the pull cord, etc.

We just moved up to a new pushmower with a bag, I am so stoked! I will probably never live in a place I need a riding mower. Grew up with a dad who mowed every few days...a 7 acre lot. I mean, that's just too much. But it was his zen time. My idea of zen time is having time to piddle around in the gardens and giving up most lawn space for edibles!

Hi Jimmianne, I hope you are okay. How the heck did the lawnmower catch on fire?

It's a new mower - the sealed cap over the hydraulic drive system came off, leaking oil onto the exhaust pipe. An odd sensation to look over your shoulder and see flames
I'm laughing tonight, but my knees were shaking! I thought it might blow up, but I had to hose it down - I was mowing 3 feet from the house.

Monarch - it's a Lexmark zero-turn : )
I hope your Dad is having fun with his...they are very nimble.
My old one is 12 years old and NEVER caught on fire =) so I think your Dad is safe if he stays off steep hills!

Missy I thought you were going to make me an offer on my farm!
No pigs - have always wanted one, but I've learn my lesson about acquiring animals. I have regular horses, 2 mini horses, a mule and until this past winter, llamas. At the house it's dogs, cats and chickens. I often wonder how I got myself into this! but basically I do love it. It's just so DAILY.

I've had a totally crappy day... But you so made me laugh!

HI JA:

I wish this was not comical.... :saint:  Is rural life hazardous to one's health? :D

Glad you are safe to post about it! :appl:

cheers--Sharon

Alas, this is also my life...but at least no combustion! :))

LOL, life on the farm = a surprise every day!
glad you're ok!

My husband had a similar experience at our new hobby far (4.5 acres, sheep, ducks, geese and chickens so far). He was mowing the taller than ideal hay pasture field. Apparently some got caught in the lawn mower tractor and the head lights shorted out and caught everything around him on fire. He was 2 acres away from any real water source. Definitely a moment of panic for him until he could stomp it out. Fire extinguishers for all farm equipment!

Glad your fire/ lawn mower experience was quickly sorted out!

that sounds terrible! what a nightmare. Your telling me this has changed the plan for mowing my hayfields myself this fall.
and now to buy a small extinguisher!

I hope you enjoy your farm!

You ain't kiddin'
what an adventure it is.

Oh gosh, who says farm life is dull? Only somebody who's never lived on one! You both are troopers!

I'm so glad you are okay! I had some acreage with my former house and I actually liked the riding lawn mower and piddling on the tractor. You are right about there constantly being something to do.

Our safety department sent an email not long ago. The email said that 37,000 people a year end up hospitalzed (with 95 deaths) due to riding lawn mowers. I know the first thing I did when I bought mine was disable the feature that shuts off the engine when the seat was empty. So yeah.....

(SNORT!) :D I've met at least a half dozen people who disabled theirs. I think if I ever get a property with acreage, I'll have to buy commercial equipment because I CAN'T STAND the consumer-grade crap.

I started with a Deere product from Home Depot -always in the shop.
Then I got an 48" ExMark and it was wonder - it is now 15 years old and runs well if maintained.
I recently got a commercial ExMark with a 60" deck and it's a dream.
well...until it caught on fire : )
minor glitch, should be back in service for the next 15 years!

I would never disable mine because I'm so absent minded. I def. don't want to step off the mower with the blades running!

what a lovely thought!
lots of arrowhead, but no diamonds ... YET...
except the ones on the soles of my shoes =)

Jimmianne, Looking over your shoulder and seeing flames seems like quite the adventure!!!!

^ I guess that's one compelling argument for having the engine up front. 8-O

My dad bought a Cub Cadet, one of their supposed "better" garden tractors. Piece of junk. It goes through deck belts faster than I can ruin a pair of pantyhose. He just contracted a lawn service yesterday. Said he's selling the Cub and will take his time buying the next mower.
