My partners mother diamond ring part 2!!

Hey,
but why is it so important? I guess you don't like the ring at all? So I guess he did not make you happy? Sometimes it is good to reconsider things before rushing into anything.

I mean in in a good way. Like I would talk to my daughter. if it's not right...no matter what it feels like, I am here for you but better you know it now honey.

No I love it , I love how the diamond looks, it’s nice and chunky lol. It means something to me and my partner so will wear it with pride. Just need to get it appraised. Is their such a thing of getting it appraised online? Since my jeweller is hours away from me.

To my knowledge, no.
It’s better to have someone experienced and examine the stone up close, IRL.
There is no harm in having the knowledge of what you have been given (inherited). This piece has some history, and it will be sentimental for you to learn as much about it, as you can. Esp. since you are the intended life partner of the man who placed it on your finger.
Knowing the story of the stone will likely give you greater appreciation for the gift you have been given. It will become priceless, and irreplaceable. More so than any appraisal or certificate.

This!

With respect to measurements, calipers are the best way to measure the width/ diameter of the stone. The link i sent to you earlier is for modern round brilliant stones. I do not think your stone is a modern round, it has a different feel to it. because it is chunky- i feel that it is a more older style.. as to the age, i have no idea.

I will also correct myself with what i thought was the measruemernts on the tape. i was not looking at the markings that stated 'm' and 'ft'. so in reviewing that, i would say that the stone is 6mm. But, calipers are the best way to measure. I point out that this stone has a high crown which means some of the mm that is lost in the standard diameter measurement has gone into the height of the stone. so the 1.09 ct wt is still correct, if that was the weight of it.

Note that the weight of the diamond is based on the loose stone weighed on a scale.

one way to think about the measurement/ diameter of the diamond.... Think of it as a water balloon. You can fill a balloon with water say 100mls ( i am an aussie, so i do metric LOL) , and tie off the balloon.... For the purpose of this discussion : say that this 100mls and dimensions of the balloon is equal to 1ct diamond.
if you hold the balloon between your knees without too much pressure placed from the knees, and measure the diameter, it will measure 'x". Now, if you use squeeze your knees together slightly, the size of the balloon will change a little. the shape is different (higher crown) and therefore, the diameter will measure less than 'x'. But you know that the weight of the balloon is the same.

I hope that makes sense.

Do not get caught up (stressed etc) with what you are measuring/ seeing with the (not ideal) instrumentation that you have, until you get the stone / ring appraised.. but have fun with what you find out.

Note, when you have the ring/ stone appraised, they are most likely to give you an estimate weight of the diamond. Why- the stone is set in the ring. the true weight is measuring the diamond on a scale. Measurements can be given to give you a guide, but because it is set in a ring it will be difficutl to give you an exact weight. The true weight is when the stone is loose. or if you can find the original report, that would give you exactly what it is.

Its a beauriful ring, im glad your trying it out =)2 :appl:
Next trip to town definatly get it a check up at the jewlers

I know people have real whoppers of diamonds in this community - and i love all those diamonds and wish i had one too
but size is subjective
Its about what you like
don't think its not big enough because other people have bigger diamonds

i don't know anyone in my circle with a ring this big ...well maybe my mother's but my sister isnt in my circle:lol-2:

i wear my grandma's vintage solitar from the 1930s, purchased by my grandmas durring the great depression and its alot smaller than your ring but i really enjoy wearing it

The other ring is my Mum's eternity, my Dad gave to her when i was born
Im sure my grandma - who worked on a lace counter ( my grandad was a tradesman in a factory ) would have been overjoyed by it as would her sisters and parents so i wear it with all that joy and love in mind
My mother wore this ER often as well as her own ER

Online appraisal, probably not [then, a pro will see more in a few pictures than us lot - I would think]

It is not inconceivable to send the ring out to an appraiser, provided some reasonable form of insurance - maybe, maybe, & it is up to the appraiser to extend the courtesy.

thinking out loud

I would be happy to take a little trip just for diamond purposes, although it is also hassle.
