So, I finally took the time as you all suggested in another thread and decided to wear this lovely ring that my partner gave me which belonged to his mother.

Its supposedly a 1.09 carat diamond. Don't have any paperwork for it ect.

I was studying it lol as you do, and it seems to measure 7mm. Does that match a 1.09 carat diamond?

I took pictures of it on my finger which is a size 5.5, with my phone, I'm very sorry but are not the best. Lighting here is bad just now.

To me, I always thought a 1 carat diamond would have been bigger??? Or is my eyes just playing with me?

Please tell me your thoughts, still waiting to get it resized xxx

It’s lovely.
Keep in mind carat = weight, not size.
Spread is what shows size across the finger.
Are you considering having it appraised, or sending it out for certification? Not necessary, but thought I’d ask since you have no way of knowing much about it....

7mm diameter should be somewhat over one carat, around 1.3 carats; this is a guess. One carat rounds are most often up to 6.5 mm & that is not a big - except among diamonds, where tens of a millimetre count, and the standard for 'big' is the width of a ring finger [mine is 12 mm]

2p

I was just wondering as I've seen all those lovely 1 carat diamond rings on here and they look much bigger than the one I have here. I will eventually go get it appraised, it's just that I live on a small island hours away from my jeweller so not sure when I will be next over.

I ahbe not seen your other thread. But the crown height of this is beautiful- it is reminiscent of an old cut v modern round brilliant.

1ct round is about 6.5mm in diameter. So, your 7mm means it would be bigger than a 1ct diamond. Also check that you measuring the stone width only or, are you including the prongs in your measurements.

here is a reference link for you about mm and carat size for a round brilliant cut stone.

when Viewing other 1ct stones on here, what size ring are the wearers/ owners? Also do they have long or short fingers? You have long fingers, so that would give the impression the same 1ct stone look smaller on your finger.

also consider the cut of the stone.. ideal cuts will sometimes look bigger as their facet patterns are crisper. I suspect that your MIL stone is not an ideal cut.

anyway, they are my thoughts..

Thankyou fir that Greg, ive taken some bad photos of the way my partner has sized the diamond hes proberly not taken it correctly lol. He used a measuring tape!! Is he supposed to count the lines or the spaces? Lol

How old do you think the ring is?? I do have long fingers. What exactly does ideal cut mean? I'm sorry im useless at these things lol.20200303_133822.jpg20200303_133802.jpg

yes, it is 7mm, based on the tape. Safe to
Say the stone is over 1 ct.

ideal cut stones gives the best light return. The facets are crisper.
Here is a link to an ideal cut 1.0ct stone where the facets are a lot crisper than your stone.

Under the big image, you will see different colour pictures/ the all read one is the ideal scope- which shows how bright a stone can be/ more red the better..

you can read up on all of this through the education or knowledge tabs.

it’s very interesting..

I agree. Based on the mm it’s over a carat. If you feel down the line you’d like something more substantial that center stone would look lovely as a 3 stone ring flanked with two additional rounds. That’s another favorite classic setting I love. Just some ideas. I love how icy white your stone is. Considering where you live perhaps make a trip to get the ring sized, prongs checked and polished. Then down the road we can assist on a setting you will love. As much as I LOVE solitaires some women like more bling on their ER. Guess what? That’s okay too. There’s no right or wrong when it’s your ring and you have to wear it everyday.

That looks like 6mm. The top half of the tape measure appears to be inches where the diamond covers 7 lines. That should be 7/32 inches which converts to 5.556 mm. The bottom markings are mm and the diamond looks like 6mm. You really need to use calipers to be close to accurate.

I was counting the lines on the bottom picture of measurement. Are you supposed to count the spaces and not lines?

It looks very pretty to me. I nearly forgot how charming and elegant gold can look with diamonds. This is a very nice ring. Enjoy it!

I take the first measurement is taken on the side of a tape marked in millimeters & centimeters, the second on the other side, marked in inches. So, yes, this is 7 mm and over one carat.

How large stones look in pictures depends allot on how large the finger is, and also on how the picture is taken - up close, there is foreshortening, so diamonds look bigger in pictures than IRL.

What is your ring size?

YAY for living on an island far from everything! I can live without a jewelry shop nearby, sure enough; the closest ones worth mention are one hour drive away [if even]

You have made me curious so I have measured my old 1.1something :D ;D engagement ring and for your reference it is about 6.7 or maybe 6.8 mm across. Very nice diamond size for a good start! :D Good luck!

Second that!

Especially these crazy days, huh? But actually any day for me.

Can you coax the shepherds to present you with some yoghurt? Newly made, it is my favorite thing on Earth, preferably on hot polenta [ & us lot have a word: 'don't give anyone what is good, give them what they grew up with']

I can try :D But first, gotta take a picture of it, then figure out how to get it online :) I am gonna try to make it all happen right after serving dinner to a hungry mob over here :D

Keep in min though, my fingers are not exactly super skinny. You might see a ring and think that it is tiny but actually it is just my ring finger which is...well, rather well nourished :D I am not sure how helpful it will be. Your ring look very, very charming on your hand.

So it is defo 7mm then lol for sure? Wasnt sure if my partner was measuring it right . My finger size is a uk k which is a us 5.12
This ring I have on is currently a size uk M which is a us 6.25.

In the top photo the diamond is held up against the inches line. Those small markings are 1/32nd of an inch. In the bottom photo the diamond is held up again the metric lines. Each small marking is 1 mm. The diamond looks to be just under 6mm as measured from both photos. You need to use calipers to see just how close to 6mm it is.

No new pic but a pic when my DH arranged for me to try other rings. Please keep in mind that we're washing our hands about a gazillion times over here so my hands are super dry and my current ring is covered in about 100 layers of Eucerin hand cream :D I am not sure if it helps but here are the pics (my old 1.1 and a 2.5 - I think...).

Thank you.

You have an absolutely gorgeous ring. It looks amazing on you and it has all that history. 10 years from now you might (and most probably will be) be looking at an entirely different situation. Personally, I think that a 1 carat ring as gorgeous as yours is a wonderfull choice for a beautiful start. Everything else can follow.

Again , I tried to take another picture trying to measure it myself, I'm afraid I do not have calipers. Not sure when I will next be over at my jewllers.

Hey,
but why is it so important? I guess you don't like the ring at all? So I guess he did not make you happy? Sometimes it is good to reconsider things before rushing into anything.

I mean in in a good way. Like I would talk to my daughter. if it's not right...no matter what it feels like, I am here for you but better you know it now honey.
