Hi

I finally got my beautiful tension set ring from niessing two days ago. It is stunning and I bought the diamond seperately and think it looks amazing in their ring. Only problem is that the ring is quite bulky and seems to catch on door handles whenever I open a door. As a reult the matte gold finish has started to get little shiny marks, almost like scratches all over it. It is not too noticeable yet, but it has only been two days! How much worse is this likely to get! Does this happen with all matte gold settings?

At least to all gold jewelry I ever worn ! The scratch-free look lives for about a week on my hands - it's a fact of life by now

Some surface finishes would make these wear marks more obvious (and I think it depends on your opinion which does what, there does not seem to be any agreement). Ironically, the non-polished finishes are supposed to be the more enduring...

An uncornfortable ring is a whole different matter though.

A matte finish will become shiny pretty quick, as your are discovering already. Truthfully, gold is soft enough that a bright finish scratches up pretty fast, too. In the end, all the light surface finishes wear away pretty quickly.

The most durable surface finish is either deep engraving or florentine finish (cross hatching)... Also pierced filigree (open work). The rest of the usual finishes looks good until the honeymoon is over...Then, reality!

I do have a gold ring that is shiny which I've worn for years, and although there probably are scratches on it, you just can't see them. I'm worried that my matte engagement ring is going to look terrible in a few weeks time with all the marks. Is there anything I can do to stop it happening? - other than not wearing it!

Is it worth my while mentioing it to the shope where it was bought? Also, will cleaning it also mean that the matte finish comes off quicker?

Cleaning is not the problem. Wearing the ring actually serves to buff (polish) the matte finish away. It will disappear as you wear it. It can be re-finished, but it will not be long lasting. I agree that a polished ring does get a little scratchy over time, yet still shines. No doubt , the natural state of gold is somewhat shiny and wearing a ring constantly provides a somewhat rough polishing effect. Wearing a ring never creates a matte finish, that's a certainty.
