I went to Moriarty Gems today, and took some photos of their gem displays. They have fine jewelry and omg, when you pick up a piece of jewelry, it’s super heavy and solid. Very nice store with a large selection of exotic gems. If you love tanzanite, he had some exceptional specimens. I also took a close up of a 16 ct sphene that was to die for.

His website is moregems.com. He has sales on YouTube as well. Lovely store with nice sales professionals. They do their own benchwork. Reasonable prices as well. I did not buy anything. I am done with gem shopping for the foreseeable future, but I love looking.

Wow what a fantastic shop. I’ve seen them on the internet but seeing your photos and reviews will make me look harder now! What a great trip. What was the favourite gem you saw (apart from the sphere of course)?

I was with my husband who was bored to tears, so I couldn’t stay long and analyze everything, but I would say that sphene really made my heart sing.

if you love tanzanite, he has a ton of it in that rich dark violet blue color that you never see. He precision cuts most of his gems and the tanzanite was no exception. He had nice Welo opal too, mint garnets, various tourmaline, and he used to have spinels, but I did not see any in the store.

I have to go back without my husband ;-)

I think they respond better by direct phone call if people need to contact them, or send them a message on their YouTube channel.

@T L, when I saw your vivid big bold gems on Show me your CS today, I feel like I should “pack up and go home”.

You and other experts (you know who you are!) have set such high tone & saturation standards for CS. I appreciate your informative exchanges here from way back, those ultra old threads are super duper educational and great fun to read, imho.

going back to hiding now...

Thank you @Neptune. There are so many gorgeous pieces in that thread, owned by mist of my fellow pricescopers, I’m continually in awe. Thank you for the kind words.

Here’s a video of that sphene I fell in love with at the store, in case people wanted a better look.

@T L Did you recall seeing any great spess there? I was watching 1 on their site but it's sold.

I found a new one from another vendor and gem is supposed to be from Brazil. What is your opinion on this material? You used to wear all 3 spess rings but I don't recall if any one of them is from that country. Curious...thanks.

I did not see any orange spessartite. I did see some Malayan garnet material, the Rwandan amethyst, tanzanite, tsavorite and mint garnets, and various tourmaline, opals.

I’m not familiar with Brazilian spessartite. I only have African mandarin orange material from Tanzania and Nigeria and one I think is from Namibia, but not sure.

ETA: upon blowing up my photos of the gem cases, I did see these spessartites.

I did a search on PS in hope of finding older threads for this type of spessartite, no luck. Sigh.

Does this look more like a hess than spess to you?

Like a spessartite. Hessonite tends to look sleepy due to micro inclusions.

I haven't bought it so come on, hit me with constructive criticism. I think I know what you might say about the color...too brown?

These were taken from moregems. I thought that it could be the one but am starting to think that it's not saturated enough, no? Profile view helps to see it better?

I would ask for a shot of it next to a white background.
