More expensive to get a ring designed than choosing a center for a semi-mount?

Yippee!
My bf and I are going engagement ring shopping..

We have a credit for a local store so will shop there. I like some of the rings they already carry, but cannot find my dream ring. I like them, but do not love them. I can put together some semi mounts and a center stone or get one designed. Is it necesarrily more expensive to design or ring or put a ring together? How many more thousands? haha

we have an appointment next week and need to know if I should bring in photos, sketches, etc.

Also, lets say I like a semi mount but would like one with less engraving, or smaller side stones etc. Would it be more expensive (sounds silly I know) to get those things removed and have the same ring remade or a bit different? There is one semi mount I love, but the round sides are large and would take away from a carat center stone. I would have to get a larger center stone, or smaller side stones.

I really love the look of a radiant or new jubilee cut center with small trillion side stones, heart filigree under the center stone, and hand engraved band.

what a great site this is!

many times custom will be more expensive b/c of the the extra labor and materials involved in making a new peice. If it's a stock setting, it's done, no new wax mold has to be made etc. There are many factors that can affect pricing but the only way to know is to ask the jeweler your working with. They will be able to give you a quote. I would suggested taking as many pictures/examples of what you are wanting. Make sure you look at other custom pieces the jeweler has made so you are aware of the quality. Make sure you can approve the wax mold, and find out what type of policy they have if you are unhappy with the final result.

Congrats on engagment ring shopping

It depends on the cost of the original setting. I was looking at a JB Star that listed for almost 13k. The jeweler I went to quoted me 6k for almost the same thing. I would think you could do it for close to the same price if it''s a fairly simple setting. I also like the idea of working with a jeweler who has a person on staff who does the work rather than sending it out.......
