Modern Cushion advice (lab report attached)

After some a period of much work, growth and learning that unfortunately resulted in her Emilya being sold we have reached the point where we are building a house (ground breaking in 1-2 weeks) and looking for rings again.

She is looking to signify this new phase with a different style ring despite how much she loved her Emilya with 2ct round/cushion halo. After trying some rings on we have a specific solitaire setting in mind but she is drawn to a cushion... specifically (we think) the modern cushion.

I have attached the specs and lab report on this cushion we are looking at for advice. I tried to keep it within the advised table/depth I read and realize this is a slightly more rectangular stone with a 1.10 ratio. She is ok with that and more or less just doesn't want a emerald cut-esque rectangular stone.

What are the thoughts on this stone? PS has never steered me wrong. Modern should have more facets of smaller nature than the chunkier AVC correct? Thus more smaller sparkle in layman's terms? Watching side by side comparisons is the only time she thought she noticed it and only knowing it was pointed out.

Thanks for any help!

I guess it is worth to note that the prices of the modern cushion's across the board through Victor seem absurdly low especially when compared to WF for example that see comparable stones (I think?) for double the price?

Hence extra confusion

Hi @adam2433

Fancy cuts, like cushions, can not be evaluated by numbers. We need up-close pictures and videos. Aset images are also useful.
Put the stone on hold and post the link so we can have a look.

Got it. Will do.

Here is another stone where you can see the online pictures, ASET and idealscope. It is antique cushion and 1.5ct (6.83x6.61) so smaller than the 2.5+ she was looking at. I do realize the ct weight doesn’t mean as much for a cushion and the cut/proportions are more important.

in her words she “doesn’t care modern or antique because I can’t tell the difference enough to have a strong preference. I just want a beautiful stone that sparkles like my Emilya”

Victor doesn’t have much in antiques above 1.5. I emailed Nicholas and will see what he has to say regarding available options and getting more details on the modern cuts. I am leery picking a stone myself on visuals as I am barely a novice and the price of 2ct+ moderns kind of raise a flag. Then again VC has a great rep and was awesome to work with before.

side note here is the setting she loves and is hoping can work for a cushion FB56885A-2A58-4E04-801E-137A8C18486D.jpegAC4E2277-2E87-4BC4-8E6D-FB6064390D89.jpeg3012F033-D2B2-49D5-9339-EDB8BE2C8387.jpeg

What did she have in her Emilya? Was it a round brilliant from Victor?

Yup. 2.01 round H/Si1 in cushion halo

Curious what she did not like about the Emilya that led you both to sell it. This setting has a lot of similarities...

It had nothing to do with the ring...

I was trying to convey we spent a period apart (when the Emilya was sold) and worked hard to be as happy where we are now.

She loved the Emilya but not just a new copy. Something very similar but also something different to signify this phase. Hence a similar setting but the interest in a cushion solitaire.

We had a great experience working with Victor and Nicholas. The challenge now seems to be how to discern a beautiful cushion online when it isn’t as easy as a RB.

fair enough, thanks for clarifying! I was reading the thread and thought the same (e.g. that she didn't like the style of the Emylia), and therefore I was worried she wouldn't like this one either. But it's a gorgeous setting!

Life is complicated, eh? Glad you have found joy together.

How many cushions has your GF seen? Cushions sparkle differently from round brilliants. Older cuts (or new ones cut to look vintage) usually have
bigger facets/bigger flashes and less of smaller twinkles like you might see in a round brilliant. I just dont want your GF to be disappointed because
it doesnt sparkle like her other ring. I'm wondering if a modern cushion where you get some bigger flashes and some smaller twinkles might be a
better fit (I think a modern cushion would be more like what you would get from a round brilliant).

This statement from your first post would be correct. Both types of stones are beautiful but depends on what she is looking for.

Will Victor set a cushion that you didnt buy from him?

She has seen a handful of modern. She is doing her own browsing/reading online and we will go look at more in person.

It seems the modern will be the better fit for her. I find them both beautiful as I do a round. If I was forced to choose I’d say I like the idea of the cushion as it is different and the modern for the many small facets.

My only concern is how to best gauge a brilliant, sparkly stone online/via pictures even if through trusted vendors.

Victor had previously said he would set an outside sourced stone but only after all in house requests were processed. I don’t know if that has changed since covid.

We will do some more in person browsing for now.
