But that's part of the point - those numbers are only one part of an application.

But what are the others? And since there is no face to face, it is only test scores, the essay, and recommendation letters that they have to go on.

You mean the advantage of working hard enough to catch her eye and impress her? Michelle was obviously a big fan of Yara's. Do you think she was held at gunpoint to this opinion?

Bottom line, different colleges look for different things. It's not an objective process, and FOR GOOD REASON. Your perfect-score students didn't have whatever ________ University wanted. Yara did. Did the letter factor in? Almost certainly. That's the whole point of recommendation letters. But to assume that's the only reason while ignoring all of her other accomplishments is irrational at best.

Then do it in private, not shout it out in a public forum.

And thank you for at least acknowledging that as it was my point all along, until the usual few tried to shut me down by calling me a racist.

And when you have two students who are pretty much tied in the administrator's view, you will then agree this letter gave her an advantage over an equally deserving student.

I can't agree to that, because 'equally deserving student' is subjective, and I don't sit on any boards of admission. But the point isn't that she had it, or that it was beneficial to her- the point is that she earned it. And it went along with a hell of a resume that had little else to do with Michelle Obama.

Conjecture, at best. We only know her GPA, nothing else.

And we do not know how she measured up to others applying to the same colleges.

But more importantly, if you think a liberal college is going to turn down a letter from Mrs. Obama, Harvard being where she went to law school, especially since it was asked in an open forum., then there is nothing more I can say on the matter.

Even one of the late night hosts came out and said basically the same thing.

And most of the articles allude to the fact that others would kill for that letter and it gave her a huge leg up. Their words, not mine. Several called it "the cosign of a lifetime."

Regarding what Yara did when asking Michelle Obama for the letter of recommendation: To quote Ruby, "I find it refreshing and honest and human." Ruby was, however speaking about Trump.

Or could it be that you are blind to anyone who has a different opinion. Conservatives are racists seems to be the new party line.

And you do realize that technically I am also a minority.

Back in the day there were a lot of places Jews were not welcome.

This isn't about conservative vs anything. This is about a person refusing to believe a young black woman with excellent grades, recommendations, work ethic, and resume possibly deserves to get into a great university. This is what your political stance teaches you? Nope. This is all you.

Please tell me how these two events have absolutely anything to do with each other - except one you will give the benefit of the doubt at every turn and the other you despise

Are you telling me that Yara discovered the fact that if you are on stage with someone whose alma mater is your choice school, seize the moment. I wonder how many have tried it not knowing Mrs. Obama and the Secret Service got them in a head lock.

Yara seized an opportunity.

Trump is being honest about something he was wrong about. Aren't you always jumping on him because he never admits to being wrong?

If that were true then why would I care about all the minority students who came to the Principal heartbroken that they did not get in to any of their choice schools despite having every credential imaginable.

Actually why would I even work in a minority school in the first place and not try to get transferred out to one in the suburbs?

Don't know why you wouldn't. Especially since you are concerned with minorities using their status as a crutch.

Apparently you can do and say whatever you want about minorities because you are Jewish and previously worked with minorities. Those two things in your mind gives you free reign to feel a certain way about people but without actually being prejudiced. It's impossible, because you worked with them. Strange, I know a few sexist men that work with women. In fact one is an OB/GYN so he worked almost exclusively with women (some other doctors were male) how is that possible using your logic?

Why wouldn't I? Could it be your assessment of me is totally flawed?

I have done at lot of living in 57 years. And they are my opinions. How you interpret them is your problem, not mine. Since you came here, you have always thought the worse of every post I have made. Maybe you are the problem? A bit too prejudice based on your thinking of how you feel I should act and think.

Something must be wrong with me because I do not think like you. Maybe you need to do a bit of reassessment on where the real problem is.

How about major trouble at the White House - Melania wears a brand of clothing that is suing Ivanka.

Or and please forgive me but this is poetic justice.

I don't actually think that you do care about all these allegedly heartbroken (and suddenly minority) students. I think you care that it was Michelle Obama. I think that you could care less about how deserving Yara was, given how many times you have willfully ignored when other people have pointed out how freaking hard that girl had to work to become successful in the industry that she has, avoid the pitfalls of childhood fame, stay grounded, work crazy hours outside of work just to get an education, and get stellar marks in AP classes despite that, while having enough energy left over to volunteer as well. I also think that you would find it "refreshing and honest" if someone piped up and asked Trump (or maybe Ivanka, as I'm not convinced Trump could put anything coherent together) for a similar letter.

So someone talented and deserving got into college. Seems to me any college is going to look at her and say "hmmm...she can clearly manage her time, juggle multiple demands, remain poised in difficult situations, and she's willing to WORK and make a contribution to the world." Who WOULDN'T want that? (But Obama!....Hillary!....delicate liberal snowflakes!...No fair!)

Any you keep making noise about how rude it was that she asked for the letter in a public forum. Do you honestly think that after decades of being a lawyer and 8 years in the White House Michelle Obama isn't used to being awkwardly put on the spot? If she hadn't wanted to do it, she would have easily deflected and said "lets talk about it more later" and quietly and privately declined. It's what pros do.

Your opinion, your problem.

Now lets wait for Eliot to do a meme of a standing ovation.

Elliot is still laughing about the woman who says "As a Jew..." in every argument accusing minorities of using their race as a crutch.

Talking about yourself in 3rd person. You really need to check that out as it could be a sign of narcissistic behavior.

You're the expert, given that "I'm done." seems to be code for "Until I want more attention."

And I'm happy to keep going! It's fun watching you tire your widdle self out trying to match wits with jaaron.

I am done, as I am done with this conversation at this particular moment in time.

Sort of like when a certain poster here says that she is bowing out for now because she does not want to insult me so she is suggesting we end the conversation.

And "widdle" myself out - should I ask what you are talking about?

Match wits with Jarron? Would you be that concerned with a nameless, faceless avatar on a message board? I can assure you I am not.

Jarron is entitled to her opinions, but that is all they are - her opinions.

Yes, Ruby. I'm currently in a rural area with steam-powered internet and was having technical difficulties. Poop happens.

Good for her but not fair to others.

I still don't understand your logic. I doubt Yara was the only teenager that has ever had contact with her (over 8 years as First Lady). She asked and Michelle Obama said yes. Totally fair as we all need to take advantage of the resources offered to us.

The Unoversities should not accept them.
Like all those other kids without enough talent to do what she does, or the work ethic to make it all work?

For the upteenth time -

All those kids who got a perfect 5.0, 1600 on their SATs and also work to help support their families.
