Match set... is this really important?

Hi all!

Would like to know if it's really important to have match set when you wear specific color stone?

Example: If I wear a tanzanite necklace, is this important to wear tanzanite earrings and ring?

If not, how do you decide what goes well together or not?

It's a matter of preference. I don't always match the stone types together, but I do match colors, and I also match to my outfit.

I don't match anything, but I wear CS earrings rarely. I usually wear diamond studs so they "go" with most things. My rings all have diamond melee or sidestones, etc. so they end up looking nice together even if not matched.

While my long term goal is to have a matched set, I rarely wear a matched set. Usually, I wear diamond studs since they go with everything or have colours that are complementary (red earrings with pink or orange ring).

Oh, heck, no!

I detest matchy-matchy stuff myself and I prefer to contrast. MY dishes don't even match, I use 6 different colors of Fiesta ware at once. Same shape plates and bowls, but all different colors. My DH is getting tired of this after 25+ years, and is starting to ask for a matching set so the table looks uniform for company, but I'm ignoring him. :D

I try not to clash on one hand; for instance, I don't wear my pink stone and my orange stone on the same hand, but I will wear them at the same time, different hands.

If you prefer to match, that's fine, but TOTALLY not a requirement.

I have lots of CS earrings, and I tend to pick colors that match one of my rings. However, I have also found that complimentary colors look nice, especially if the shapes of the stones are similar. For example, I will wear my blue chalcedony cabochon earrings with my star rose quartz cabochon ring. I have been selecting simple 18k yellow gold bezel settings for my cabochons, so they tend to look nice together regardless of the stone color.

I'd wear more matched sets if I could afford them, but I love putting together new looks from the pieces I have. It's part of the fun of getting dressed in the morning. :))

I have one matched set but it was a total fluke. The earrings and ring stone came from a Barry parcel, and the necklace stone came from Freke. They all happened to match, so a set they are!

I do not necessarily match, in life I find diversity a good thing, so I think this attitude spills over my jewelry. But for later reselling (and many peoople end up upgrading their stones), a parure would be better, so if you have a nice stone that you think you may upgrade later, finding a "sister" or two "brothers" is a good thing. I think people around me notice when I wear matching jewelry and like it, but if you wear matching color clothes, you can get away with totally unmatched jewelry.

I don't have many matching sets but I'd love too! I believe Santa is going to bring me bezel milgrain studs to match my e-ring! I have a matching aquamarine ring and pendant that was gifted to me for graduation. I like mix and match as well though... so it'd be nice to have several matching sets to pick from.

i do not like the matched set look: too much sameness.

i do not match my jewelry to my clothing.

MoZo

ps iLander, i much prefer the mixed to the matched fiestaware settings.

I personally feel weird if everything I wear matches, I go out of my way
not to match actually. The only thing I am iffy about is for my metals to look
ok together. If I wear gold earrings, then I prefer my pendant chain be gold as well.

Want to know the really sad part? I'm sneaking in Le Creuset cookware (in different colors) piece by piece. In a couple of years, the pots and pans won't even match.

Poor guy :D

Some of my jewelry I have made into sets- off the top of my head I have a sapphire set, citrine set, lemon quarts set and Amythest. The rest Doesn't match but I tyically wear fashion or diamond earrings so I don't worry about it. I"m not a huge fan of matchy matchy unless it is more formal. I personally like the bohemin look more.

Matchy-matchy... (m-mm... I think I overdid it today) :wink2:

crasru, that sapphire and diamond bracelet... does that beauty have a thread?? I haven't seen it before, and it's gorgeous!

I tend to wear pearl earrings when I wear a pearl necklace but otherwise I don't do matchy at all.

My e-ring is green, and that is worn no matter what other colours I am wearing. I tend to wear some pieces with certain clothes because they go better - moonstones look better against dark colours for example. Don't match earrings to necklaces or brooches.

I gotta say, crasru, you wore some of my favorite pieces from your amazing collection today.

Wear what you love, and you will look confident and amazing. :appl:

Crasru I love every single piece in that photo.

I don't have any matching sets, except for 2 pearl sets, but I have never worn them together yet, I don't really like the matchy look.

Rae, it has something somewhere in the jewelry forum, with very bad photos; Chrono with her graces complimented me on it, but solely because of her kindness, because if you find this thread... the photos are awful.

It is an old antique bracelet which I won at an auction, the diamonds are grey and the stones per se not interesting, Yet even some jewelers compliment me on it. I think it is just very elegant and feminine. I wear it all the time, matching or not matching, because I believe it to be "lucky". Thank you for the compliment.

ROTFL!

Le Creuset is nice stuff. Good for you!

Okay, how sad is this...

In the house before the current one, I had my kitchen tiles custom-made to match my Le Creuset - the cerise ones.

The company that made them, charged me the same as their plain white tiles in exchange for my giving them the idea and them putting it in their lines. They even did them with enamel glaze not ceramic and bought some pieces of Le Creuset to match the colour correctly. They did look amazing with black granite worktops and pale birch cupboards.
