Martini Studs: Do They Look Smaller?

These look like martinis... See what I mean by dot?

They could also be bezel set... hard to tell from the photo.

Another basket set stud. Love the profile.

Last one! Hubba hubba. These look like how my 2 ctw look on my ears.
It seems like the basket settings "raise" the diamond so there's more definition from the ear.

Isn't it so funny how celebs' studs never droop? Love it! Hmmm... W-prongs, here I come!

Interesting thread. I think it will be very helpful to those buying/setting new studs.

I have small diamonds in 6 prong settings. I think the 6 prongs make the diamonds look bigger and I''d have to go WAY up in size in the 4 prongs to make a change worthwhile. Had a jeweler compare larger 4 prongs to my 6 prongs, and they could clearly see this too.

No drooping here but small size and screw backs.

Stone Hunter, I agree! Hmmmm... makes the decision tough. DH insists the martini studs do have a profile. LOL. Maybe it's all in my head. But I have seen the basket set studs in my size and they do look bigger. Even when you plop them down in the unset settings, the basket sets make the stone look bigger. I wonder if that's because they're raised or more defined? The prongs? So strange!

Anyway, here's more eye candy to consider for you stud enablers!

OK, so here is a bezel or martini setting on Charlize. I can't decide whether or not I like this flatter setting or the traditional pop out stud setting. This one is very sleek and modern.

Here again are basket set studs - the profile makes them pop a little more on the ear.
Though I must say the martinis make the diamond pop more due to sparkle - it's so bare it's striking in its own way! Decisions, decisions!

Is it in my head that martini settings (because they sink in) melt/blend into the ear?

Hi Bliss,
I had to smile when I read through this post. Can you just imagine what Yukietal will say when you go in there asking for a different setting? Personally, I think I like the 4 prong WF setting and I always thought I would get the 8 prong setting once I got your size studs. For me, it is more about being symmetrical and I think I like it to sit a bit off the lobe. Your earrings are going to sparkle like crazy either way.
P.S. I did email Yukietal about your leverbacks. He called, but I''m scared to call him back.

Bliss,

I think you've raised a very good point and one that I hadn't considered before. I'm now wondering if I should've gone for W-prong instead (?!). I know I didn't want the 6-prong due to my studs' size (2.3ct approx each), ie. they would for sure droop even with mega-jumbo backs, but I'm now wondering if W-prong would have been better (?!). I'm already suffering from DSS and the wheel is already set in motion (at least in my own mind

), after seeing 4ct each earrings on this young girl the other day!

Too funny. Personal preference varies so much! I''m laughing because my sister has 1ctw studs that she never wears - because they stick out too much!
41.gif
Maybe it''s something about both of us spending so much time on the phone at work?

tigian! Call Yekutiel! LOL. He's soooo low pressure and will work with your budget.

You'd be surprised at how fast they'll be in your hot little hands! Whee!

PHOENIX...This pic is for YOUUUUUUUU!

Your studs are amaaaazing. Amaaaaazing. I wonder if the w-prong setting would droop with your size earrings? I'm curious! We should e-mail WhiteFlash! Martinis make the diamond look "unset" which I guess is part of the appeal. But diamonds "unset" also look smaller than the ones that are "set." Hmmmm...

I remember seeing my studs loose and they look exactly the same when in the martini setting. My other studs, looked MUCH bigger in the 4-prong plain basket setting. I think the w-prong settings are low so the center of gravity would be more towards the ear, helping to eliminate drooping. With jumbo backs, I think I'd be set.

For your big big big beauties, I would keep them in martini settings! But hey, here's one that looks basket set for your viewing pleasure! LOL.

Gecko! LOL. I know! I know! Wish they could be Transformer robot settings that would retract when we got on the phone! Do you think that your sister has crown settings? I've seen crown settings stick out a LOT. Basket settings are lower to my eye and don't stick out as much - juuuuuust a little more than martinis, which burrow in a little too much for my taste! Or my earlobes must just think they're delish and gobble them up!

Here's a pic of a crown setting I dug up.

I think these are the old school 80s settings that jewelers used to use - they stick out far and droop.

Here's a huge pic of the "dot" like martini setting in the ear.
See how there isn't much definition? Lots of nekkid sparkle, but it doesn't POP as much?
It looks like a sparkly sticker more than a stud? Or is that my crazy imagination?

martinistud.jpg

So mine kind of look like this in pics. Nice size blurry sparkles, melting into the ear.
Decisions, decisions! In the martini settings, the edge of the diamond isn't really defined with prongs.

Another for Phoenix!!!

That was so nice of you to lend Nicky your earrings for the night. They're gorgeous!

phoenixearrings.jpg

This is so fun...hope you're enjoying the eye candy as much as I am!

So you can see the studs from far away due to the profile. If they were super flat against the ear like martinis, I don't think they'd be as prominent.
34.gif
And I have tons of long hair, too! And hungry hungry hippo earlobes.

How come Phoenix is lending all these celebs her earrings? How do I get on this list to borrow them next?

Bliss, you are THE BEST!! You're just too CUTE!!

I think the ones on Nicky Hilton are more like 4ct each, maybe even 5ct. Btw, I think she's very pretty, much prettier than Paris. Thanks for all the eye candy, Bliss.

Incidentally, when I saw yr ears in yr other thread, I thought they were very cute and dainty.

I think it's GREAT idea to ask WF to see if they can put the same diamonds in various settings, martini's, W-prong, 6-prong etc so we can see how they differ. It's very true what you said about the martini setting making the diamonds look nikked and unset diamonds do look smaller than set.

Oh Bliss ... you TORTURE me! Just as I''ve given up on those Cartier babies & moved onto bezel studs! GAH!

RE: your sparkly stickers ... count me in as one who loves the flat against the ear look. Partly because so many fakies come in huge baskets. Baskets seem more common. They droop. And I don''t like the side profile of most baskets -- more shiny metal, more room to get all scratched up, prongs are usually bulbous.

HOWEVER, the exception is those gorgeous WF "w" prongs. Neatfreak & Iwannaprettyone both have those (and many more I''m forgetting at the moment). In the sizes they have they are just scrumptious and were the only other option I considered for my wee antique stones. I like them because the square off the diamond a bit and I have a square cut e-ring & have lusted for other square cut items like a lucida pendant or dream cut earrings. They''re also super huggy & nesty and yummy looking.

Maybe your martinis just take some getting used to?

Hi Bliss,

I have the best of both designs. My jeweler doesn''t like to set in true martini style because he''s received too many complaints about the earrings sitting in the wearer''s holes and sometimes stretching them. He makes a modified version, three prongs but set in a basket. They sit a little ways out like baskets do but have three prongs so more of the diamond is showing.

Phoenix - I'll let you know about the reset... If I had your huge studs, I might actually keep them in martinis! They are soooo scrumptious!

OMG, Deco - I'm in love! Thanks for pointing me toward neatfreak's and iwannaprettyone's w-prong studs! Those are TO DIE FOR!!!!!! Deco, you got bezel earrings? I can't wait to look those up! How did I miss those???

I hope iwannaprettyone doesn't mind me posting her gorgeous stud photo here.

I''m with Deco...

BTW I''m loving this thread with all the eye candy! I love my bezels... so I''m good with my sparkly although mine is not nearly as large as what you are considering,,, just a baby sparkle
