Marquise setting- is this possible?

Hello, I'm new to the forums. My SO has asked to take me to look at engagement rings this weekend (!!). We've talked generally about what I'd like, and now I guess we're getting serious about looking for something.

Initially I wanted a very plain east-west prong setting of either an emerald, oval or marquise diamond. I'm starting to lean toward marquise just because it will look larger for the price and the carat size.

However, I was hoping to have the prongs sit on the tapered parts of the diamond rather than on the points, if that makes sense. I notice that they either seem to be set in some kind of bezel, or with little metal covers on the ends of the points (sorry if there's a name for this, I don't know what it is).

I'm assuming this is necessary to protect the diamond- is that true? I'm not really crazy about the way it looks. Just to give an example of what I had envisioned, I found this Herkimer diamond from Bario Neal. Any idea if this would be possible with a marquise diamond?bario_neal_marquise.jpg

You would want something something on the tips if it was going to be in a solitaire. But you can put a regular prong instead of those v prongs you don't like.
Here's an example.

Or you can avoid putting a prong if you've got a halo as some buffer. See how this has prongs near but not on the tip? I think this is a good option, I know you said you wanted a solitaire but a nice plain shank halo ends up looking a lot like a solitaire.

Thanks, I've been searching the forum and there are a lot of really pretty rings!

However, every one I've seen has that 'frame' around the east-west pointed ends of the stone- I'd prefer to avoid that, and I know I don't want a bezel or halo of any kind. I'm wondering if it's a necessity for marquise diamonds (to prevent damage) or if it's possible to set it more like the one above.

Okay, I figured it was a necessity to protect the stone.

I actually don't mind the prongs on this example due to the way they wrap around the stone more, like a claw. I'm going to save that image to show a jeweler!

Now I'm wondering about the metal. I like yellow gold, but I wonder if having the prongs in white would be better. So many decisions to make!
