So it was my birthday yesterday and DH surprised me with a new watch!
I needed to get it sized so I asked where he bought it. He says Costco (my boy loves a good deal), so I decide to take it to the mall instead of my normal guy because the mall store is an authorized dealer. I walk in with my watch box and ask if I can get it sized. They say sure, we just need to see your receipt. I explain that it was a present so no receipt. They asked who bought it so they can check their records, I give them DH's name, and they say they have no record of him. So I ask if they can just size the watch and charge for it. They say ok, $30. Seems a bit steep, but I'm there so I tell them to go for it. I want the watch to be loose like a bangle, but the guy doesn't really get it and keeps insisting on taking out more links, that it will look better tight. I agree to let him do it and he takes the watch to the back room. I hear some mutterings and then he comes back out in a huff, asks me where the watch is from because its defective. He says the pins are bent so its impossible to size. "Hopefully you can send it back because nobody will be able to size it"
I get a bit discouraged, but I pack up my watch and take it to my regular guy, explain the situation. I even tell him its from Costco. He laughs and says he checks out their jewelry counter whenever he's in. He sizes it by taking one link out at a time to get the perfect bangle size. He says there's nothing wrong with the watch, sizing it is straightforward, and charges me a whole $3.50. When i comment on the low price he just says its a slow day and he knows me so why not.
I should have known better than to bring a watch to the mall!
ETA: I played dumb about the watch's origin with the authorized dealer because I felt like he would be annoyed about it. I wasn't trying to get him to size it for free or anything like that.
