I should be working be instead am looking at settings for Asschers. I stumbled upon this one that just made be gasp!

Question, can a jeweler create a design based on a picture? Or collection of pictures?

Yes, they certainly can! In order not to infringe on someone's design, they may make a few slight modifications. You can also take different elements from different rings create a dream ring. WF is great to work with to help you on this type of project. Finding an asscher I hear Good Old Gold is very good at. Check with them for stones.

You are also likely to find a setting similar to that already created. Check with Pearlman's. They can help you out finding a setting.

AHH, asschers instead of work? NOT that uncommon around here...

PS I am off today...so I'm not an offender today...

Liang, most skilled jewelers can help you create a design inspired from a picture. I''d tell that you it''s typically more successful if you have a few pictures of the piece from different angles.

As cinnamon mentioned, most jewelers won''t create an exact reproduction of a design as that would infringe on someone else''s copyright. However, most people typically want different elements from different pieces they like and wish to blend them together into a piece. (I like the prongs of this one, the basket of that one, the shank of the second one, etc.)

Hope this is helpful.

If you want that setting. I''d send the jeweler the link to the Topazery page you got it from and ask them if they can do it. My choice for that particular setting would be Maytal Hannah Hoffman.

Thanks so much for your help! There''s more pictures of the ring, so that shouldn''t be a problem. Gypsy, how did you know what site I found it? I neglected to mention it in my OP but it''s from a site called Topazery.com. For people who like vintage/antique jewelery, some beautiful looking pieces there. I know nothing about buying from them or anything. I just stared at their pictures all afternoon... But anyway, I''ll put together a few pictures of things I like from everything I''ve seen.

Second naive question. Is it best to go to someone who specializes in custom design, like Maytal Hannah (Gypsy''s rec) or whatever? Do big designers/BM chains not do custom designs? Also would getting something custom designed online be okay? I mean, you can''t try anything on etc, so how do I know what it''d look like??

I pretty much did what Allison mentioned because I could not find one single piece that had everything I liked- if I had, I would have gotten it.

I brought in several pictures of what I liked and what I did not like; I thought it was extrememly important to express very clearly what I wanted and what I did not want. I also brought in my own sketch and used the photos to show specific details.

Maytal had a perfect understanding of what I wanted (and didn''t).

"Big designers" like Ritani or whoever will customize... I don''t know if they will completely do a custom ring from scratch based on your design, but they will make changes to their existing designs.

When I was considering a Ritani but wanted a different head on the ring, a B&M said they could do a custom head. I would have sent it to Ritani for the custom work and felt completely comfortable with that.

If a B&M was using the quality of diamonds I wanted at a fair price and had the level of skill I would want in creating my ring, I wouldn''t have a problem going with a B&M... I just didn''t find that.

What I wanted... exactly what I wanted... I found by meeting with Maytal Hannah. One thing I liked about Maytal (can''t say enough good things about her) is that she creates the ring by hand... no molds, no machine engraving... the detail she does is flawless. She is extremely skilled.

How I found out exactly what I wanted is I went to stores to try on TONS of rings... they didn''t have exactly what I wanted, but I tried on numerous ones to get an idea of different design aspects and sizes. I tried on halos... got an idea of what I liked and what I didn''t about each halo. Looked at widths to know what was to thick. Looked at solitaires and 3-stones, etc. I had to picture what they would look like with all the design elements, but it gave me a really good idea of what I wanted and it ruled out hundreds of rings based on what I found I didn''t like.

I''m jewelry obsessed. And I''ve been ogling that setting for a while now. It was one of my contenders for my re-set of my own asscher. But I wanted a halo. I know all about that setting, the diamond ... all of it. LOL.

I would go to Maytal for that ring. Trust me on this. My second choice would be Ocean Pearlman through Wink Jones (who did my custom setting) my third would be Whiteflash. Do not go to a BM, in my opinion.

As for trying it on, what it looks like. Find something similar to it and try it on. : )

Gypsy, did you put up pictures of your asscher? The before setting & after? I''ll search your username for them. I''m obsessively stalking pictures of asschers now. That doesn''t mean I have a problem, does it?

My FI already bought the diamond; I''m wearing it in a plain solitaire setting. We''re going to shop for the setting together. He brought up a Verragio (spelling?) design that he liked, but I can''t remember what it was and didn''t save the picture. It seems like pave settings are all the rage now, and a lot of Verraggio has pave. I don''t care much for them, but then again, I haven''t tried anything on yet...

Wow, it seems like a couple of you have great things to say about Maytal. She''s in LA though, and I''m in Chicago. Does she do things via email etc or would I need to go to LA? (It''s snowing in Chicago now, so I''m not exactly going to complain...)

Others have worked with her strictly via email I believe (you can do a search to see more of her work or go to her site Maytal Hannah). Most of my communication has been via email. I have met with her twice... this could have been done via email as well, but since I''m in L.A. I wanted to meet. She''s super easy to work with. I think one thing that helped is that I was very clear and specific on what I wanted.

There will be another Maytal ring (not mine *sniffle*) on PS in about a week... there are quite a few on here and it seems the # is growing.

Sera, thanks for the site & tip. I''ve been lusting at the shots of some of the work Maytal has done. SOOOO pretty!!!!

Gypsy, you are one prolific poster!!! It took me a good 10 mins looking for your ''after'' post! Thanks for digging both up for me I appreciate it. And you''ve probably heard it a zillion times now, but your ring looks amazing!

Been here for a few years. Another reason why I can spot where that ring is from. Completely jewelry obsessed. Thank you for the compliment! I''m sure yours will be stunning too!
