Well, we are at that point.....

I came across an Oval online last week...
1.51 carat
8.58 x 6.40 x 3.96mm
F color
SI1 clarity
61.8% depth
59% table
1A cut (according to grading on D.Atlas website)
claiming no bowtie
good price ($7200)
BUT... with an EGL cert

After talking to the vendor, he verified with the owner that it was in fact a gorgeous stone, so we took the EGL-risk and had it sent to Dave Atlas''s office here in Philly so that Chris (internet stone guy) could check it out with us in person. We went to see it yesterday, and color, clarity, everything checked out according to Chris. I can see a bit of a bow-tie, but it is minimal... and the stone is sparkly enough that I don''t think it will bother me... at least I hope not!

So now, decision-time! I''d originally been contemplating cushions, but really like the extra rounded-ness of the oval... and the fact that it looks so BIG, dimension-wise! It is a low-ratio oval (1.34) so actually a little more cushion-like in shape than most ovals. I think it will be great with the setting we like, which is a thin platinum band tapering in to a small RB, on either side of the center stone. As ovals go, I think it''s probably about perfect... I guess I''m just a little nervous about making a final decision. What if I decide I should have gone with a cushion.... ahhhh!!! Still, I can''t imagine sacrificing the spread at this point, now that I''ve seen how nice this looks held up to my finger......

Words of encouragement needed, please... even from all you cushion-fans who think I''m crazy for not getting a cushion! I think I''m partially influenced by how pro-cushion this forum is (including my BF!)... isn''t anyone pro-oval out there?

You are lucky you have found something beautiful!

I say if you love it and it''s beautiful and sparkly, take it! I know nothing about Ovals, but I understand how scary it is making that final decision. I haven''t been able to do that yet, but hopefully soon! And I am constantly questioning if I do in fact want a princess, or maybe a round, or maybe an asscher??!!

Just go with your instinct, I''m sure it will be gorgeous!!!!!

I love a good cushion but how can you beat a stone that will face up so much bigger for its weight versus a cushion that will face up smaller? If you''re a size gal and like both looks, it''s a no brainer.

(Was that encouraging enough?)

I love cushions. But ovals with a nice ratio, like yours, have absolutely irresistible spread. I would have that fat lovely oval and run with it.

Oh, I love ovals but I also love cushions, and asschers, and RBs, and OECs, and ECs, and......see what I mean?

You''ll probably always find other shapes and cuts to be beautiful, so there''s almost no use in wondering about the "what ifs" (unless, of course, you''re planning a trade-up/trade-in or great RHR down the road! hehe). Ovals are spectacular and unique...have you seen Marvel''s? And the spread is to die for. Yours is going to be delicious for sure.

We NEED more ovals on this forum!!

I love ovals, too! That one sounds fantastic! Being a size girl, I too, love the extra spread you get with them! If it sings to you then it''s the ONE!!! Great find...sometimes ovals can be deep, but, yours is not. I''m so excited for you!

You guys are the absolute best...

(And yes FG, definitely encouraging enough... you managed to sum things up perfectly, actually!!)

I actually had no idea what kind of responses I was looking for when I posted originally, but you''re all saying exactly what I needed to hear... it is so true that I''m never going to be 100% convinced of any one shape... they''re all beautiful for different reasons. And though I never realized I was a "size girl", after seeing that spread... I am now!

I''m also a bargain-shopper by nature... so I kind of like the idea of getting the most for our money, size-wise. My BF thinks ovals are too common (both our moms happen to have them for their e-rings) but I really don''t know anyone else who has one in "real life"... so it will be fun to contribute something new to PS (yours is GORGEOUS by the way, Miranda...).

I''m a perfectionist, so sometimes I worry that I''m never going to feel totally certain about the ring we choose... but I think I''ve hit the point where I just need to make a decision and be content about it. I''m just so ready to have it on my finger!!

Exactly!! I am the same, just need to get to a point where I need to make a decision and be happy with it! I always think that there might be something better out there, can drive one batty!

Go buy that oval girl! And if it looks bigger than it is, then

Ephemery...I do not think ovals are that common...I do not know anyone who has one in life...I agree about Kristy''s remarks too...there are few diamonds I DON''T like...I like almost all shapes in the right setting if they are nice stones...clearly, I have my preferences, though...when upgrading I looked at cushions, ovals and e/c''s...I LOVE my ring but saw Kaleigh for lunch and we were admiring her asscher and round and boy I could make a case for either too! I think this is why one has wrists and ears and throats and more than one finger for rings, so even if we broaden our jewelry horizons we have the ability to have a bit of everything if we are lucky enough to get it! If the stone looks great and you are thrilled, I say get it. Does you mom or mother in law mind that you would all have ovals? I think they would be flattered, and I happen to think it is a very elegant finger flattering shape myself...

I love the look of ovals! I don''t know anything about them, however, so if it''s a good stone according to your guy then go for it! If you''re still trying to decide between oval and cushion ask yourself if you never get a cushion in your life will you be happy with your oval?

Can''t wait to see what you decide! Have any pics??

A well-cut oval will light up any room, and the one you're considering sounds spectacular. Don't worry about a little bow tie - most fancy cuts have them to some degree. I say go for it! (My oval is 1.75, F color.)

How amazing....what kind of coincidence is that?

I think ovals are beautiful. I love it that one sees them so rarely...except in your family, of course...LOL...

Go for it!!!
