For your average girl's e-ring? I know this is truly subjective, but I'm sure there is some secret women's handbook out there somewhere...

Depends where you live. Some countries only wear gold bands. Some wear .33ct. Some places only a 3ct will do. What does she want and what can you reasonably afford? I wouldnt go below .25 or above 2 ct personally.

I purchased a 1 ct stone, so it's moot for me now...just asking for the sake of discussion.

FYI... ..center stone only... ;))

U.S. avg E-ring is J SI2 .73 ct

P.S. avg E-ring is H VS2 1.16 ct

No.Ca. avg is 2.51 ct

So.Ca. avg is 2.63 ct

NYC avg is 2.77 ct

midwest avg E-ring is .48 ct

avg E-ring in Texas and Florida is 1.72 ct

I wish I could find it.
To me, women have always been a complete mystery. :read:

I think you will be just fine with 1ct. Like everyone said size is subjective but I think 1ct is always pretty safe in terms of size!

1 carat should be nice, my partner doesn't want any higher than .7 lol and she prefers around .5.

I get that completely - love my 0.60 for 24/7 wear.

Geez, I'm glad I don't live in any of these places - you'd have to be a millionaire to get engaged and have a nice ring!

I gotta argue that Florida one!...I live in FL and rarely see anything that big (1.72). I think its much lower here.

Travist223 I've been following your other threads and can't wait to see your finished ring! I think a 1ct diamond is perfectly lovely :))
Personally I have a 1.11ct EC and am happy with the size.
There's a disease called DSS (Diamond Shrinking Syndrome) that many regular PSer's catch & then they want bigger & bigger diamonds
I have tried to fight it off by buying multiple smaller diamonds (diamond studs, pendants, bands, etc)
Rest assured in the real world a 1ct stone is a generous size!

Does "a month's salary" still hold true? Gross, not net, of course!

It also depends on the size of her hand and finger, body built, life style and personal taste.

Someone who is petite and has a minimalist style who wears little jewellery is unlikely to be too happy with a postage stamp size diamond ring in a fussy blingy high setting, even if it costs a small fortune, IMHO.

DK :))

I've been following your thread and I think a ct sounds nice.

I'll agree with others that say you have to mix her expectations, the norm in your area, her family/friends, and of course your budget.

And I don't just mean don't spend more than your budget. As I would personally be upset if my husband overpaid. If I found out he spent 5k on a half ct diamond I would rage. not because I wouldn't love a half ct if that was our budget, but because he's just, to me, throwing money away.

Lowest acceptable carat weight is whatever you can afford comfortably. ;))

I think it depends where you are in FL. South FL that average sounds about right, but the further north you go the smaller the stones (at least what I've seen, and I've lived here my whole life). I live on the Gulf coast and my 2.20ct sticks out like a sore thumb - most women here wear ~.75.

Dancing Fire, where do these numbers come from? I gotta say I was surprised by the numbers for NYC. I've lived there for 7 years and even if my SO's old investment banking circles I really didn't see many 2.77cts.

1ct is what many strive for. There's just something about being able to say "It's a full carat." DeBeers ran a magazine ad campaign back in the '80s "buy her a diamond of a carat or more" but I think that 1ct benchmark has been around a very long time.

I think a lot of .7-.8ct diamonds have been sold to PS people, at least the first-time buyers, in the past couple of years or so.

A few years ago, 1.2-1.25 ct only cost about 10% more than 1ct but bumped the diameter up to about 7mm, and the larger face-up size is obvious. For me, personally, about a 7mm RB is the cap for a daily-wear ring. I have small hands. 7mm looks very large on me, but is still small enough that it's not getting in my way like 7.5mm and up do. Larger diamonds are taller as well as have larger face-up size. The extra mass sometimes is annoying if I'm doing keyboarding or doing a lot of work with my hands. I save my larger diamonds for special occasions when I don't actually have to do any work. haha

My daily-wear ring is .8ct, about 6mm diameter. I live in a small town, and to most people that is a very big diamond. .25/.33/.5 is most women here have.
