Hey All,

I've been shopping online and looking at diamonds for a while because I'm thinking about popping the question. Through some shopping together I've figured out what kind of setting she wants and now it's time for me to pick out a diamond. I'm trying to spend between 5 and 7 thousand on a princess cut diamond. I'm looking for something that's a little bigger than a carat, a color of H or better, and I'm pretty flexible on the cut and clarity as long as it's gonna be a face-clean diamond. I'm leaning more towards an ideal cut because from what I've been told, the cut is more important in princess cut diamonds. I've narrowed my search down to these two diamonds:
http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD06703315
http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD06469199

Both of them have GIA and GCAL reports right on the website, please let me know what you all think. I'm also open to other suggestions so please feel free.

Thanks in advance for the help and wish me luck!

Does she want a princess cut diamond? I would always lean towards your SO preference in terms of type.

As for the diamond... With any shape it is important that you select the best cut, ABOVE any of the other c's. Princess cuts are more difficult than rounds to determine their performance and as such i would suggest shopping at a vendor who would provide you with the ASET images of the diamond, so you could pick the best performer.

Yeah, sorry, I should have included that in the initial post. Just very nervous about the whole scenario. Princess cut is the type she wants.

In the GCAL report for the 2 diamonds I listed, it shows their Optical Brilliance Analysis. Not sure if that is the same or different from the ASET images. Here are links to the GCAL reports from the two diamonds. Sorry if it sounds like I don't know what I'm talking about, despite months of research I still feel like I'm in the dark here.

edit: Realized I put the 1st diamond 2nd in this post and the 2nd diamond 1st. Switched them to the correct order to match the initial post.

Out of the two you posted, I prefer the 1st.

If you are commited to BN, then sticking with a signature ideal is very smart. If you are open to searching elsewhere, look for AGS0 stones. I'll see if I can find any others that might be of interest.

And yes, please confirm with the intended that she wants a princess. They've gone a bit out of preference in the past few years. Cushions are very popular and are safer without the sharp edges. We can help you look for a great cushion if you want to go that way too.

Re: Looking to buy a diamond this week. Looking for some he

I was originally going to go with BN because they have a setting that I know she wants, but I really like the whiteflash diamonds that you both have posted.

If I were to order the setting from BN and the diamond from whiteflash would I just need to bring it to a local jewelry to have it set? Or would I be better off picking a BN diamond because they would set it for me?

Just contact WF and show them the picture of the setting, I'm sure they have the same one or can custom set it for you.

What setting are you looking at? Maybe we can find something similar for you.

eta - BN is sometimes picky about selling the setting alone. This may not be possible, and you'd need to contact them to find out if the one you want is available for this.

OP, could you list the name or item number of the setting? This link goes to the home page. :))

So that ring will likely NOT be a good candidate for everyday wear. The 3 sided pave is going to very delicate, and it will also eat any wedding band you put next to it. I would have her reconsider that choice.

You just need to copy and paste the link into a new tab. BN site is funky.

Name: Monique Lhuillier Trillion Cut Diamond Engagement Ring
Item Number: 44076

New possibly working link but might be the same one:

Okay, that link didn't work either, but I found it. That setting can be made easily -- I would not buy the ML, as it doesn't look very well made at all. The prongs are enormous and just don't look very refined. Also, I wouldn't do three sided pave... I'll bet WF has something or can make something much nicer than the ML. :))

Re: Looking to buy a diamond this week. Looking for some he

So we're back to square one then? I have to agree that the prongs look very large in the photo, especially on the larger stones in the recently purchased section.

I just know she's a fan of the three stone styles. She'd prefer to stay away from solitaires and halos.

Re: Looking to buy a diamond this week. Looking for some he

Those prongs on the ML are so huge, yikes! Totally detracts from the stone. Do you have a budget you want to stick to for the setting? And are you set on the trillions?

Very classic style but no pave

Love this but the 3 sided pave again has to be handled with a LOT of care.

Since you know the style she likes, would you consider having a ring custom made once you find the princess center? David Klass is very good and very reasonable.

Re: Looking to buy a diamond this week. Looking for some he

Here is a custom setting by Whiteflash that is similar to the ML setting. You could have them do trillions instead of the princess sides. The pave is one-sided and bead set, making it much safer.

This one has trillions. WF could make the shank thinner and daintier, more like the ML.
