Looking for your opinion on a rock...

Agreed with @rockysalamander, the 1.11 is the way to go! I wouldn't be worried about the fluor causing it to look blue. Usually by the time you get down to H color, there's enough yellow in the stone to cancel out any blue caused by the fluor. I think it will just appear white under sunlight!

The blue glow caused by fluor is usually only prominent in very high color (D-E) diamonds.

But as she mentioned, have JA check for haziness, and also check the stone yourself once it arrives.

I like 1.11, too. Glad you placed it on hold, right away!!
Can’t wait to see the finished ring!!!

You guys are amazing! Thanks especially rockysalamander and TreeScientist for scoping out those options with me, offering advice and (frankly) educating me. To others (sledge & doc3), though I stuck with JA I still learned a lot from your retailer recommendations. I came in here with more or less assembly-line thinking on diamonds and you guys set me straight. :)

I’ll ask for JA to check for haziness and hopefully no concerns. If all is good, I’ll re-post here in a few weeks with some photos and impressions. Very exicited!

Hey Guys,

So I am mostly all set to get this ring shipped over to me. (This stone: https://www.jamesallen.com/mobile/l...h-color-vs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-4901538)

As I read more however, had one more question:

JA lists the girdle as “thin to slightly thick” on the site, but in fact I think it likely “very thin to slightly thick”. I’m basing that on the AGS report that gives a range of 0.3% to 4.1% (leading to a 1-point deduction on the cut, making it Excellent rather than Ideal). I also believe that AGS/GIA measure girdle variance differently. (Whiteflash site: “The AGS notes thickest and thinnest places at any point on the girdle. GIA reports the thickest and thinnest parts measured at valleys only. Therefore girdle notations on AGS reports will seem to have much more variation.”)

The IS image shows good light return, so not keen on abandoning what seems like a good stone. Just wondering if you think there’s any “risks” or compromises due to this girdle range? I suppose I can ask them to check it for for durability; wondering if there could be any bad “optical” effects as well.

Thanks!

And here is the IS image again:

Girdle thickness has no effects on optics, per se. If it is overly thick, it can be hiding weight you don't get to enjoy. If it is overly thin, it can be more fragile. If it is on the thinner side, I'd avoid a 4-prong setting.

For 6-prong solitaires, I like:

Update - I received the ring this week.

Here are some roughly-taken photos of the stone: (top photo, indoors under incandescent light) and outdoors (overcast). Sorry that they are a little blurry.

Overall, I think I am quite satisfied with it. I was told by gemologist inspection that there is a “very slight haze” under UV, but that for a fluorescent diamond it behaves as you would want it to. I think you might be able to see some of that haze in the second photo - but at “eye distance” it generally looks a pretty white. I was also told that it has exceptionally strong fire, brilliance and scintillation.

Here it is in “office lighting” next to a window:

And here it is under incandescent again:

In full sunlight it does go blue - ranging from a deep blue (face up at sky) to white with a gentle blue colour/glow.

For kicks, I put it under a black light and you can see that it is indeed very fluorescent (my camera pictures are a bit misleading on the intensity probably, but it does go a deep “light blue” - I feel like this one could be at the higher end of a “strong” fluorescence rating).

What do you guys think? I can always return, but all in all, I think that do like the uniqueness of the stone. And of course end decision will be her’s!
