Hi everyone, as some of you are aware, I had been looking to get an eternity ring made, but the difficulties that that entailed, despite all the help and advise here, made it too difficult a proposition at this time. So not as a consolation by any means, but as something i've been meaning to do for ages, I would like to get my first pair EVER of diamond studs, round brilliant diamonds.

So starting point is round brilliants, of about 1ctw, I don't mind platinum or white gold setting, but not yellow gold.

A few questions/thoughts

1. I am quite colour sensitive as I discovered looking for my diamonds for the ring. My e-ring centre is a G, I can see some element of a tint in really bright days, but other than that ok. I tried on some lower colour diamonds, and really they were not for me. So the question is, do I need to go with D-G for earrings, or can I get away with lower?

2. Setting, a standard like as an example:
https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond-jewelry/diamond-earrings/studs/
or a martini, I know the prong number can vary:

I'm not a fan of bezel set, so i'll rule them out. Is there an advantage to one over the other?? especially as see no.3!!

3. I loved Bliss's earrings with the jackets, they were my inspiration for my engagement ring reset. So I would like to get jackets for them for when extra bling was needed!!! Does that rule in or out the above settings.

4. I want to wear these every day, not just on occasion, so do you think .50ct each is too big, or just right??

5. There seems to be a big jump price wise between .80ctw and 1ctw, so bearing in mind that I would like jackets for them, am I better off going with the smaller pair.

6. Push backs or screw backs, what are the advantages/disadvantages?

as some examples!!

Thanks everyone.

I would not go with D-F color unless the price was equal or very close. A G will look as white on the ear as anything else in a superideal cut diamond. I prefer Whiteflash because their upgrade policy has no restrictions as long as the new stones cost at least $1 more than the ones you want to trade in. Mine are H color, and they look fine to me! I would only be able to tell a difference if I held a D color stone right next to them.

I think a .40-.50 per stone is a nice starter size. I would not personally buy jackets until I reached my final pair. I prefer a 4 prong setting as it has a flat base that sits flat against the earlobe, whereas martini settings can sink into the hole and enlarge them if you wear them often. Pushbacks are fine. Screwback posts end up with wear and may eventually have to be replaced. Plus they are just not quick to take on and off, and diamonds need to be cleaned regularly to look their best.

I recently bought 1 ctw studs, K color. Every day when I put them on, I look at them in my hand and think they look so small and then I put them in my ears and think “just right”.

I went to a store and tried on 4 prong and martini, and I just loved the martinis for how close they sit to my lobes. I went with pushbacks - the screw backs had larger posts I couldn’t even get through my holes.

My ER is an E, but after seeing my friend’s (much larger) K studs, I knew I was fine with the color for studs. Standing very very close to her, I could see tint, but sitting next to her at lunch, I don’t see tint, just sparkle.

I agree with DS and think that the D-F color would be a waste of money. A G or H would be white enough especially since you aren't staring at the earrings like you are at a ring. The .80 to 1ctw would be great for everyday wear. (I wear a 1.5tcw and have been very happy with this size for daily wear.) I like my 3prong martini backs but that is just my preference. I agree that push on is better than screw back as I take mine off nightly and clean them. You do want to look for a good trade up policy, you will probably want to grow those babies!!!!o_O

Thanks for the info. Do you have photos of yours or a link to them? I'll have a look at the G/H and see what they look like. Are yours gold or platinum setting? I'm more drawn to the 4 prong setting, than the martini.
Thanks!

Thanks, i don't know if i am brave enough to go down much more in colour, i won't be upgrading and time soon (i say that now)!! I also wear a headset on my head for most of the day, so there is a limit to the size of earring i will be able to wear for comfort purposes.

I had to laugh when you mentioned the upgrade policy, I hadn't considered it, as I didn't think I would be changing soon, but probably best to keep it as an option!! I will have a look at the G/H and see what i come up with. As i said to @MonkeysInk i wear a headset most of the day at work, so there is a limit to how big i can go for comfort.
