I just remembered that I do have a couple Mali garnets but they are cabochons so I don't feel I get the full sparkle effect of a faceted Mali garnet.

I can't wait to see your finished project @CaseyLouLou .

So faceted only, no cabs? My preference is a contrasting colour, so that it pops out.

Same I think a golden hued stone will detract not enhance the design

its going to be awsome
if that's grandma then that's a pretty cool grandma

when i was younger no one had cool grandparents (that's not a criticism rather an observation)

i would love one of these butter cup type rings

I saw this one and thought of you. I was tempted but it’s bigger than I usually wear.

Not Granny at all, esp on your hand.

I like the yellow much better IRL, although I would not have predicted that. It has a more "intentional," designer-y, harmonious look to it.

what's a granny look anyway ?
my grandma was born in 1907
ive seen her entire wardrobe come back into fashion and go out again and come in again probably at least three times
in fact ive seem everything ive thrown out from my own wardrobe ive brought since i started working in 1989 come back in at least once

buy classic pieces you like

i would call this a classic piece

I haven't read the whole thread but the opal will have a flat underside. The two gemstones you're considering using aren't cabs. Presumably you're thinking about taking out the whole gemstone setting and replacing it with another but will it be too high (taking into account that the stones you're using will sit higher)?

This was a fun poll because the responses were very evenly split between the pink and yellow. It is now with the jeweler and I chose the yellow for this same reason. I imagined a yellow daisy type of flower with a yellow center that isn’t a perfect match but looks natural. I think it will be fine but I will post photos when it’s ready!

Yes, I missed that at first but luckily it sounds like my jeweler will be able to drill it out enough to sink the new stone into the setting. Hopefully it will be sufficient to also allow cleaning beneath the stone. There is enough depth inside the flower that it won’t need to be set up too high.

It’s finished! It was a tough call but I went with the yellow garnet because I was inspired by the buttercup flower setting. I’m very happy with it since it will be versatile and can be worn with anything.

I sent it to David Klass because I knew the opal setting might have a flat base that would need tweaking and he worked his magic to set my stone.

The Mali garnet is ideal cut with hearts and arrows and sparkles like a diamond. Tons of fire. The setting should be nice and protective for it too. I’m so happy it turned out well.

I love this ring! Yellow is a perfect choice for this setting and I bet the garnet's fire is absolutely stunning in person! Congratulations & wear it in good health.

I'm just catching up with this thread now. As I was reading, the things you said about each stone told me that your gut favored the mali garnet more, but you thought you should set the spinel because of the contrasting color. I think you absolutely made the better choice in following your gut. It is fabulous!!

Wow, you’re good!! Your psychoanalysis was spot on. I wanted the yellow garnet to work but I also thought it was a risky choice even though I was also worried the spinel might be too ‘cute’ for me with the flower setting.

As it turns out, the tone-on-tone is more subtle and neutral so I can wear it more easily. I’m so glad the risk paid off. I have been wearing it constantly!

It looks positively lovely. Yellow on yellow was definitely the right call, it's so fresh and youthful, and perfect for the summer months. No wonder you're not taking it off your finger! :D

I'm glad you went for the yellow. I thought you probably would go for the pink but the yellow is a more understated and striking at the same time (I know that doesn't make sense but..)
