Looking for feedback on some CADs for a custom setting

Hey everyone,

I am sure some of you have seen my posts about getting a custom setting done, and I am now at the point where I have some CAD renderings that I can examine. So I thought I would ask here and see what everyone thought, and more importantly, how you guys and gals think it compares to the one setting I am trying to recreate.

I should add that the halo stones will in fact be set with a split-prong design.

Here is the setting I want to recreate (disregard the ring on the left where you see two rings):

Here's one more of the actual setting and the CADs:

Too much metal. the pave isn't being done right to get the look you want.

I agree, though I was told that the final actual version would be much more delicate and have a split prong design to eliminate the chunky look.

They can tell you what they want. They aren't going to tell you, "You're right; it's crap! Let's start over!"

Unless they can SHOW you a REAL ring, made with EXACTLY this stone placement, with a CAD that matches this one to see... so you can see what they say is true, I can tell YOU that it's going to be like this one: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/the-cads-are-in-custom-round-halo-er.174603/ Which I DO NOT LIKE for a PAVE HALO, too much metal. It's used by BGD in the pictured setting because that is NOT a micro pave halo. Those are LARGE melee (3-5 pointers). For a micropave halo that is the WRONG pave style.

I think the pave STYLE is wrong. Period. I think that prong placement is going to end up with a lot of metal showing. No matter what they say.

Well I am not exactly sure if you are voicing your opinion of the styles that you like or just didn't see the original pics very clearly (unfortunately they are not the best quality) but I am trying to come as close to the setting in the photos as I can. That means using big melee stones. The ones in the photo were 3 pointers with a 1ct round center. The stone that I have is a 1.5 so I want to go up in size of the halo stones to keep the proportions the same. So I am not worried if the halos are too big. Mainly concerned with how closely the CADs reseble the ring in the photos.

I think what Gypsy is talking about is the AMOUNT of metal BETWEEN each stone in the halo. It doesn't matter how big the melee stones are. Your CADs show the stones set quite far apart.

Here are the original CADs for my ring (the design has since been changed) But look at how much closer the diamonds in the halo are set. It seems to me, the with a well done halo, the diamonds should almost be touching.

Aside from that... I think your ring is stunning!!
I can't wait to see pictures of the finished product!
And BTW... If you LIKE the diamonds spaced farther apart, than that is OK... it is just different than the "inspiration" ring that you posted.

Good luck!

If it were my halo, I'd prefer to have them placed in a tighter formation on the halo portion. I think the shank is spaced perfectly, but there appears to be a bit too much metal visible on the halo portion. That's just what appeals to my taste tho - would you prefer more of the metal around the halo?

It will be a beautiful setting, that's for certain! Nice design! WIll you be wearing it with a WB? any style in particular? will it be pave as well? Curious, you know :naughty:

Thank you ladies.

Dougdgirl, I agree that the stones are set a bit far and there is probably too much metal showing. Going to have to address this on the next round of modifications.

Enerchi, I am not looking for an unusually large amount of metal. Just trying to replicate what is in the actual photos. As for your band question, I myself will not be wearing it as I am making this ring for my hopefully soon to be fiancé :). I am sure my ring will not be as fancy. She, on the other hand, mentioned that she doesn't think that she wants a band. But we'll see what she thinks after she sees this ring.

So for the moment, I am thinking I am going to request that the halo is made smaller in diameter keeping the halo stones the same size. This will allow me to raise the stone a little (something I'd like to do) and bunch the halo stones closer together. I am also thinking to make the basket a little thinker by adding a little metal on the bottom of it to make it look more like the photos. Any comments on those changes?

Glad you are going to address the halo with the designer.

I would keep the diameter of the halo the same, but ask if they could fill it more with melee to make a fuller pave visual presentation.

Ask about how to fit a wedding band/eternity under the struts - if you can do a bit of planning now for the WB in the future, that would relieve a lot of issues down the road! Maybe a plain band is enough or maybe you'd prefer a micro pave WB ... just allow for enough clearance under the halo, to accommodate whichever you go for.

The one thing I know for sure is that my gf loved the look of the ring in the photos. We spent a good four hours browsing jeweler's row here in Chicago and saw many halos with smaller melée stones (and therefore a larger number of stones in the halo) which just didn't do it for her. However, when she saw the ring in the photos, which has two melée stones on each side of the halo and one on the corner, she absolutely fell in love with it. So it's been my mission to recreate that exact look.

The other thing I remember was her not liking the stone being set flush with the halo and preferring that it be slightly raised. However, I don't want a big gap between the stone and the halo, and that's why I am thinking I might have to make the halo just a bit smaller.
