Hi all, this site was a great resource for me when I was ring shopping over a year ago and the community here helped me with this purchase:

I am now helping a friend shop for a ring and was wondering if anyone might have stone ideas for him. He is looking to spend around 4k on a cushion. I suggested this one:

I was wondering if perhaps others have been browsing cushions in this price range online recently and might be willing to share other suggestions.

Thanks!

I like that one! I assume you have it on reserve? Ask JA for an ASET to see how it performs and if it checks out then it's a pretty good deal. If you're looking for a performance cut and willing to spend a bit more for 1ct then August Vintage Cushions at Good Old Gold would be where I'd look. Their cushions take the guess work out of finding a light performance diamond. Victor Canera also has one of his site but it's about 1500 outside of the price range you're looking. And Engagement Rings Direct only has a .7 Royal Chandelier under that price point.

Thanks. I'll tell him to get the ASET on the JA stone to see how it looks.

Thoughts on these ASETs?

Still leaning towards recommending the antique cut stone as the JA gemologist described the other as a true J and that it might look a bit hazy.

Hazy is a concern. The non-antique stone has a better ASET. But the Hazy would disqualify for me.

The antique stone in that case would be the better choice of the two.

The JA gemologist also said this was the best option as it had the best light performance and was the brightest and liveliest.

Even thought the ASET doesnt seem outstanding, I still think this will be a good pick. At $4300, it also seems like a good value (based on what I paid for a 1.33 old mine cut).

it is a pretty stone and you are right, it is a good value price wise. You already know the ASET isn't the strongest out there especially under the table, but it's a trade off at this point. And JA's return policy is bullet proof so get it and see what you think of it in person. :wavey:

To get the best performance in your budget and over 1 carat in an antique facet you are looking at an M Si2. http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9877/

So... given that... I think it's a fair balance to go for a higher color and clarity and see it in person and see if it steals your heart in person. MAKE SURE YOU wrap it in ALUMINUM FOIL (make a bezel around the stone with foil) and see what you think. It will approximate a setting. You can use paper too, but I find aluminum foil easier to wrap around a <6mm object. Pay special attention to the facets under the table. Make sure the center of the diamond isn't too dark for you.
