Looking for Asscher settings in NYC

I am going to NYC to look for an upgrade after 20 years-woohoo! I'm looking for an Asscher or square cushion 2-2.5 ct, G or better, VS 2 or better, good cut or better and .95 to 1.08 symmetry. I'm planning to hit Kwiat, Saturn Designs, McClelland and McTeigue. I love Art Deco and Edwardian. Any suggestions anyone? I am as interested in settings as diamonds because there is no better place to look...I have size 3 1/2 finger-I know, tiny! Hopefully 7-8 mm will look big on me- Any help offered much appreciated. Thank you in advance-

Hi. Congratulations! Lucky you. I would call the places you want to go to so they can have some stones to show you. If they don't have any in stock, they can bring some in. Because you are traveling, the more you can set up in advance, the more time you have. I used Coco Fine Jewelry in Jewelers on Fifth. He was great. I called and gave him my specs and we talked for a while. He then brought in 3 stones for me to choose. It worked for me! Good luck!

I'd recommend seeing if you can swing by GoodOldGold.com as well as they have great eyes for asschers. I have a size 4 with a 1.35 asscher, getting this setting custom made locally, but to give you an idea. I did try on a 2 ct asscher once, and it was just the Perfect size so this will be wonderful on you and large! lucky you




I found a great site that had art deco/edwardian rings ... and I think Asschers definitely will look righ at home in those settings.

Threadjack away! All gorgeous pics and I love the band too. Your custom looks great-but why not a similar setting for your Asscher though? Meeting with Kwiat, Saturn, McLelland and McTeigue, and Leon. Leon can go by one name on Pricescope, like Cher, can't he?

lol..yes, Leon does get recognize by just his first name here. I'm looking forward to what you have in mind after you see some settings and stones.

As for my custom, I prefer no prongs and more sleek design, sometimes it doesn't always work for asschers though I think since they are more art deco edwarian era but I do like a little special added touch to a simple band like the engraving and milgrain works somehow to tie the asscher in (could just be making it up in my mind though to make it all fit in somehow)

I did see online a simon G asscher halo as well (might be a little bit on the larger side perhaps?) I have seen some Simon G in person, and think they have very nice quality settings as well.

As everyone else seems to mention, my one worry is it will not sparkle as much, especially if it needs cleaning. I do like the sleek with slight antique touches added in...Will check out Simon G. in person, thanks for the tip.

have you looked and compared rounds vs asschers? My SIL put her round next to my asscher and both my DH and I still prefer the asscher. The asscher is mesmerizing to look at, it does give off a different effect. Before you decide, really explore the shapes and facet patterns. I don't regret it one bit switching from a round to an asscher.

While you are in NY you might want to check out Steven Kirsch too. He used to work for Leon and just made Frankie's new ring and it's stunning!!

Well, I would go to Good Old Gold for the asscher. I'd have him call in a few for you to look at (and make an appointment). Then I'd head to Steven Kirsch for the setting once you have decided on a design. I hate to say it, but I think I would be overwhelmed going to all those places, and not all of them will give attention to the optics of the stones like Good Old Gold will.

My favorite asscher ring was made by Leon. I just need to find it on here.

Oh, and don't settle for less than excellent cut. That is the one thing that almost everyone agrees on here! Cut has more to do with the beauty of the stone than any other factor! I'd go to Good Old Gold just to look at their August Vintage Cushions!

Since you mentioned cushions, here is an august vintage cushion from Good Old Gold set in a spectacular Leon setting (but I'd recommend that Steven Kirsch do it because Leon is now only doing this setting for stones he sells, apparently).

Well, I'd say nothing from Kwiat or Leon knocked me out. Kwiat did have some finely made vintage inspired things, but nothing I'd want to wear on my left hand ring finger. But Saturn and McClelland & McTeigue knocked me out. The problem is that the ones I liked are not really made to have bands go with them. They sat a bit low on the finger and a wedding band would rub/scratch. I would have to persuade them to change the design by raising it a bit (which they don't really want to do), or change my choice . They do each make a design that accomodates a band, but they were not my first choice. I'm going to have to sit on this and think a while.

I am rereading my comments, and I do not mean to sound uncomplimentary at all about Leon Mege's work! :oops: I think I was just in frustrated mode. I loove all of the Mege work I've seen on PS and in person. I think I meant I couldn't have imagined creating any of the beautiful things I saw, and if I was not adamant enough about wanting a specific thing, then his gorgeous custom work is not for me. I think there is plenty of gorgeous work out there and I could choose something very well from what's available-but what? If you have something super specific, well done, and high end in mind, he's your man. :praise:

ANYWAY, anybody see this Single Stone setting before?? Thought this was pretty great. The ring is gone, but they can make a beautifully done reproduction of it I'm sure, as Heather there mentioned. No stone for me yet, I really would like 2.2-2.5 antique Asscher...I'm patient. :snore:

I haven't seen that singlestone ring before but they do wonderful custom work so I don't think you'd be disappointed if you went with them.

If you have time, I think you should stop by my jeweler Allen. The store is called Bianca's Jewelry and the contact information can be found below. I know he has some Asscher's and Asscher settings in stock but I believe if you call him in advance he'll get you a lot more options.

I was looking to buy diamond studs in a unique setting and he suggested that I wait even though prices are going up due to the upcoming jewelry show in Vegas. He's bringing back a lot more options for his showroom and apparantley that make me change my mind about the studs...lol!
