Looking for 2 carat pear

Hmm a pink halo... it's an interesting idea - i'll pitch it to my SO. I think she's leaning away from the halo setting, but the idea of a colored halo probably hasn't occurred to her. Thanks for the suggestion, backwardsandinheels!

If we are talking settings here I have some ideas
bezels are my absolute favorite for a pear. if you're lucky enough to snag that old cut pear, maybe a bezel with some millgraining? I like colored gold but white would be nice too, like this one from ERD

Or If you cant manage to get that old cut pear, you could get a modern pear and pair it with a tiffany style bezel and it would be amazing!

ariel144 and Niel - I showed her your suggestions, but she's not really a big fan of the three-stone look. Also, Niel, I like your idea about just not telling her that they're the final candidates. I was talking it over with one of my friends, and she had a similar thought - that I show the pictures to one of my SO's friends, then have that friend show it to my SO under the pretense of that they're just of some random internet diamond :halo:

Good news, though: I've convinced her to go to GOG in person, so she's going to visit in two weeks from now. I'm going to ask the staff to show her some pears, some H&A rounds, some AVRs, and maybe even some AVCs. If the final candidate pears are in by that time, then she'll get to see them, otherwise I'll either pick without her or ask that she return for another visit :sun:

Thanks for the help! I'll share what GOG shows me as the stones come in, but Jon is currently on vacation, so it may be a few extra days.

I wasn't suggesting that 3 stone ring just that an old cut pear which has chunky faceting is so beautiful...like the one found on ebay on the other thread.

Niel - I don't think she's really into the bezel setting. She's actually given me a fair amount of information about what kind of setting she's interested in (similar to the Tacoris I linked to earlier in the thread). I'd definitely be interested in getting some feedback, but right now I'm mainly focused on trying to nail down the diamond first :D

ariel144 - oh OK I think my SO likes them, too! They seem a bit hard to find, though, so hopefully that eBay one works out. We'll find out soon!

Understandable. Just silly me throwing out ideas. None need to stick. :wink2:

I hope that eBay one works out too! It would look so nice in a tacori.

Hi all,

Still waiting for more info from GOG (my SO has a Saturday appointment) and the ebay seller, but I've heard back from JA! Of the three diamonds I inquired about, there was one that they seem to think was the clear winner. It's a 1.98 G VS2, and according to them it "has great fire, brilliance, and scintillation, with a very small bowtie," has "nice symmetry," and "appears completely eye clean." I've attached the ASET and the image of the diamond from their website - does this look like a good candidate? I find pear ASETs a bit difficult to read, so I'm not totally sure what I should be looking for.

Thanks so much!

Hmm, that image really doesn't have much red. I'd keep it as a possibility but try to find one with better light return.

She is going to be in FAR better shape once she makes the GOG visit. Being able to compare pears with better performers such as rb's, AVR's and AVC's, she will be making an INFORMED decision. I think this is SO important!

Perfect advice - DS you are always right on!! :appl: That is so important for your GF to see all options and then she can decide which type of cut she prefers. I'm eager to hear what she thinks after her GOG trip!

A BIG ditto to this suggestion. What a great position to be in ...a day at GOG with that budget...bling heaven!

GOG GOG GOG New York Rocks and holding them in your hand and GOG showing you under different lighting and comparing stones is the way to go.

Thanks for the evaluation diamondseeker2006 - the other two pears that they sent me ASETs for actually had a bit more red, but the SA said that their bow-ties were too noticeable.

Thanks for the support, everyone! I agree that my girlfriend should have a much clearer sense of what she wants after the GOG visit and I really appreciate the advice of PSers who suggested that she go :appl: Hopefully she'll see something that's love at first sight, which would make the process a lot easier, especially since it doesn't seem like things are going to work out with that eBay pear. (As I posted in that thread, the eBay SA originally told me that the pear would come in this past Tuesday, so I had made an appointment with them for Saturday, which is the day that my SO is going to GOG - I figured this way she could see everything at once and make direct comparisons. Unfortunately, when I called on Tuesday to confirm, she told me that their revised due date is at the end of next week. She didn't give me an exact day, but it makes me feel a bit uneasy because the eBay listing ended last Thursday. I could understand if they might not have had the stone ready until that Tuesday, but to say that it's out of their hands for two weeks after the auction ended sounds strange... :? )

That is strange because they just relisted the pear, but no mention about it being at GIA.

Hello all,

A few updates: My girlfriend has now been to GOG twice. The first time she went, it was before Jonathan had sourced pears for her to look at, so she compared various other shapes and walked away loving the AVR. After a week, she went back, and this time looked at AVRs in comparison to the pears that Jonathan had brought in. She spent a good chunk of time thinking it over, and eventually decided that, even though she thinks that the AVR offers truly amazing light performance, she really just prefers the way the pear looks on her finger.

Of the pears that Jonathan showed my SO, one stood out to her and I've attached various pictures she took of it on her finger, mostly cropped to show as much diamond as possible. Some are alongside the AVR she had been considering - it's the one you suggested, Niel! I've also attached a picture taken by GOG and the stone's ASET. My SO told me that she'd be happy if I chose this diamond, but that she wasn't completely overwhelmed and could also be happy with another choice. So basically, I'm at the point now where I'm thinking about whether I should just take the plunge with this one, or ask Jonathan to try to find me some other options.

Does the pear shown in the pictures seem like a good choice? I thought it looked fine on her finger, but I didn't think that the ASET looked spectacular (although it could just be that I don't really know what to expect from pear ASETs). I also thought that the inclusion near the center of the diamond seemed pretty noticeable, but my SO didn't mention it so maybe it's not very visible in person. Overall, I'm leaning somewhat toward making the purchase because my SO is pretty insistent that I make all the decisions on my own from now on, and I'd rather get a stone she said she likes than risk getting one she hasn't seen. The pear is a 2.02 G SI1, ~1.6 l/w ratio, 59.9% depth, and a 57.8% or a 61.8% table depending on whether you're looking at the GIA cert or the Helium scan (not sure why these are so different).

Sorry for the long post, and thanks so much to everyone for all the help you've been giving me - I really, really appreciate it. As an aside, the setting shown in the pictures is probably the one I'll end up using (either that or I'll go custom). I've also attached a picture from Tacori of how that setting would look with a pear, but I'd be getting it in platinum or possibly white gold, not yellow gold.

Thanks!!

I also have more pictures that my SO took if it'd be helpful. Oh, and regarding the eBay pear, on three separate occasions they've pushed back the date for when they expect the diamond back in stock for my SO to look at it, so I'm not planning on contacting them again.

that setting is so pretty!

That pear shape looks lovely!! And as far as pear asets, they never look good.

I do notice that inclusion, even in the picture thats farther away. could Jon keep this stone AND try and find you a similar one without a noticeable inclusion? did he say it was a good performer?

Im glad she looked at both. Now she knows exactly what she wants. She wont have any doubt a pear is the one for her!

As far as the inclusion, it is slightly noticeable in the first few pics in the holder (next to the AVR) but I can't say I can really tell in the hand perspective. I think it'll be beautiful in the Tacori setting you like!

i do think that shape is lovely for the setting, its just a matter of the inclusion i feel like. i still wonder what jon said about it. Is that screen shot from a video he made you?
dont laugh but i wanted to see that stone in that setting so i did a lazy photoshop, figured i would share :wavey:

Another vote for holding out and asking Jon to get some more pears, she might not have seen the inclusion in her excitement and if she was looking at multiple stones on the day. It's the type of thing that when you get it home once she does notice it, her eye will always find it from then on and it might drive her batty (it would me) in the future!!!!

OK I just sent an e-mail to Jon asking whether he thinks the inclusion is visible to the naked eye, since the only two pictures where it seems to be apparent are ones that are really close up to the stone. He had previously said he'd only be able to hold the stone for a few days, but I also asked whether he might be able to hold it for a little longer if he thinks it's worth exploring other options.

Niel - I really like the way the setting looks with the pear in your mock-up - it's much prettier than Tacori's image with the yellow gold! Also that photo is just a still shot; Jon didn't make me a video, presumably because my SO went to see the stone in person, and I probably won't ask for a video for that very reason (although I may change my mind when I get ready to pull the trigger).

See if Jon can find a pear that is shaped like the ebay pear. I still love that ebay pear. I think they pushed back the date because of GIA - GIA has been really late with their dates. I find they are taking sometimes more than a month now!

oh good im glad you asked. I worry that that inclusion is too notable, sense i can see it in a few of the farther way pics. The only one i cant is the one with the three diamonds and setting in it. Id just be concerned about her getting used to it overtime and here eye going right there. And i feel like he should be able to find a SI1 without black inclusions right in the middle of the stone.

I think it would be a little hunt but i love charmys idea...if he COULD find one, oh that would be amazing!

OK I've just gotten word back from Jon - he said that the inclusion is invisible to the naked eye. Maybe we're just seeing it in the pictures because we're looking for it? I think I'm just going to go ahead and take the plunge. In the worst case scenario, when he ships it to me, I can decide whether I think the inclusion is actually invisible and, if so, return it within ten days.

Also, CharmyPoo - I didn't give Jon the link to the eBay pear, but I did specifically ask him if he thought he could find a pear with chunkier faceting (this was after my SO said she loved the AVR), and he told me he couldn't.

And Niel - I showed my SO the photoshop job you did on the pear/setting and she really loved it! She said it looked like you had done a great job and she particularly enjoyed that you added the five prongs :)

Yay I'm so excited! :D

Thats great that its not visible! And Im glad she likes the mock up, as quick and dirty as it was  Thats exciting!! I cannot WAIT to see how this turns out its going to be beautiful! What is the size of her finger?

These pictures are so magnified. In real life, the diamond is going to be much smaller and the inclusion is going to be much smaller. I think you're going to have to see it for yourself.

I love pear shapes! Can't wait to see the finished product!

Any update? I've been dying to see.
