OMG - there is a live siege underway in a Lindt chocolate shop and cafe in Sydney in the main business district, one of my best friends works in a building a few doors down and goes to this cafe, I have been texting her and her husband but so far no reply to find out if she is safe. I feel so sorry for the 13 people currently being held hostage inside;

She is O.K - her building is in lockdown but she is O.K. I hope they can resolved it peacefully.

So glad to hear she is okay!

It's so frightening. Here in Melbourne they've closed the Lindt shop too. I really wish the media would stop pinning the blame and labelling groups as the culprits, no on yet knows who is behind it. They just need to focus on getting those poor, terrified people out.

I hope they can get everyone out safely as well.

sorry to read about this today and thankful that at this point in time none of the hostages have been injured.
will keep all in my thoughts.

Its almost 5am here in England and i've been up all night watching the news and praying. This must be so terrifying for the people in that cafe and their friends and families. I hope its over soon.

I'm keeping a close eye on what's happening with this too. Praying it doesn't go on for too much longer.

I'm not sure I would say no one knows who is behind it. ISIS and other extremist Islamic groups have called on "lone wolfs" to carry out terrorist acts whenever possible and I think back in September they actually specifically called out Australia since it joined several other countries who formed a coalition against ISIS. I do agree right now the focus should be getting people out but they should 100% identify who was behind it (directly or indirectly).

Re: Live siege in a chocolate cafe in Sydney Islamic terrori

Our authorities have intentionally requested our media does not identify the person or any group they might belong to until it is over. They are aware of his identity and today he forced a few of the hostages to call our media and family members and demand they publicise what he wants both on the TV and via social media. The fact they are not doing this is hopefully demonstrating they or indeed he as a "lone wolf" are not winning a public war terrorising innocent people of any country.

Rather than inspiring hated amongst Australians and social division, there have been social media campaigns today with over 40 000+ people declaring they will ride next to, give free car rides to and help protect any muslim or anyone else who feels unsafe and threatened by any group;

They named him very late tonight/early am our time - Man Monis

Hoping it is resolved peacefully. They are saying they are down to 5 hostages...still 5 too many.

Re: Live siege in a chocolate cafe in Sydney Islamic terrori

I'm glad to hear that the hostage situation has ended, and that it is apparently the work of a lone lunatic rather than part of an organized terrorist operation. Unfortunately, early reports indicate that two people died in the operation.

By the way, I do realize that is in many ways a hopelessly naive statement... that today's terrorism seems to be inciting heinous acts by peppering people ready to give in to their own demons with permission to kill others. But I am glad this wasn't part of a larger coordinated operation.

Latest update: http://www.news.com.au/national/mar...-man-haron-monis/story-fncynjr2-1227157498633

I went to bed last night thinking that surely this would be resolved peacefully but to my utter shock and horror when I awoke this morning that was not the case. :shock:

Sadly two innocent people have been killed by this nutter. He has a long history of criminal behaviour and was known to authoities. Unfortunately he was out on bail when this happened. I will not attempt to speculate on his motives but we can be certain that his behaviour does NOT reflect all others in his race/religion. It is the "lone wolf" situation we have most to fear from as they are totally irrational.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all involved including the police who attended this dangerous situation. ;(

Re: Live siege in a chocolate cafe in Sydney Islamic terrori

It's so sad for everybody involved. And so scary that it happened in our own back yard. My husband, daughter and I regularly go to that cafe when we are in town - we were in there buying chocolate on Saturday at lunchtime. It makes me queasy thinking about how easily it could have been one of us - or one of my friends, many of whom work for the bank opposite and for the TV station across the road.

So breathtakingly sad. My heart is breaking for those poor people this morning - filled with gladness that the siege is over but equally filled with sadness for the victims and their families. May we speak with kindness to each other today - I feel we may all be a little fragile - and let love drive away the darkness.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the people that were involved and their families. It is a sad sad day for all Australians.
