Wrapping it all into 1 fun topic.

It seems that even deal hunters can't find a steal in the diamond business so the next best thing appears to be buying from those that have to sell, because heck, my offer is going to be better than a pawn shop right? I might also be wrong on that.

Anyway someone locally I've found wants to sell a Leo Diamond Engagement ring. Sadly it's a GSI certification. From what I've read it seems the specs can be on average 1-3 ratings below if it were GIA. But at what price point (assuming I look at it, like it, and get it appraised/examined by an independent appraiser I've found on this website), does it makes sense? She's offering it for $4000, retail on Kay Jewelers website is $5999. If I can get it for $2500-3000, wouldn't that be somewhat of a deal? I dont' want the setting at all, really just after the diamond.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Good, Good, and from a Mickey Mouse grading lab??...PASS!

So what you are really getting is a Good/Good meaning below average cut diamond from a bogus lab which is probably I/J possibly a K in colour and probably an I1 in clarity. So the question is what should you be paying for that.... $4000.00 will buy you a much better diamond...

The 14K setting it is in is worth about $150.00 to $200.00 you might get $80.00 to $100.00 if you are lucky if you resell it. The diamond is worth around half of what she is asking, probably less, depending upon what the "real" specs of it actually are (which we don't know). There are no "bargains" when you buy a diamond. The best decision you will make is reading what makes a beautiful stone and then buying one from a trusted vendor, or use the information you have learned to buy a preloved stone that is a decent cut and graded by a decent lab so you know what you are actually getting.

you are right about one thing there are no deals in diamonds if you want to give one you'd be proud of...So pick a budget and let us find the best bang for your buck without bargain hunting. really

Thanks for the replies everyone!

From reading pages of this site it was a pretty sure thing no one was going to like the GSI! My counter to being "proud of" a diamond is that my girl and myself are more indifferent to the finer nuances on diamonds (on aveage I'd say). We looked at a high end jeweler in town and she was indifferent between G, H, I, SI2 was fine with here. The more important issue was the size as anything smaller than 1 carat-ish probably wouldn't look that nice in the setting she likes and on her finger (well thats my opinion anyway). I know carat isn't the ultimate measure of size but I'd even like to go higher...

I never plan on selling the diamond so to me if I'm not getting ripped off and it looks great and I pay less thats a win isn't it?

The jewelry was showing me 1.037ct G color and SI2 clarity diamond for $6995 (excellent cut I think). Seems pretty high.

I'd like to make my budget 5k (for the diamond), round, but any money I can save, well there are plenty of good uses for it coming up!

What kind of setting does she want and what is the total budget diamond + setting?

The setting is some in-house design at the jeweler. Looks a little antique (with filigree). $995 in white gold, $1695 in platinum so i'd say my budget is 5k + 1695 ~ $6700

why James Allen? Just happen to be your favorite loose diamond site? (or that discount you mentioned?)

Most PS vendors give a discount to members. I'm sure that's the best she found.

Not necessarily my favorite, but they have an extensive inventory and show videos.
