For all the people who have a good understanding of square diamonds (princess, square radiant, square emerald)... when you look at the actual dimensions of the stone, should the length and width be exactly the same or what is a considered as close to perfect as it can get?

For example, say a stone has the following proportions for length/width: 7.45 x 7.21
Should people strive to have those be 7.45 x 7.45? Is that possible? What should the ratio be for an excellent quality diamond?

Thanks!

I''ve been shopping princess cut diamonds and have only come across a few diamonds that have a 1:1 ratio. After looking at several diamonds in person, I''d prefer not to get one that is noticeably out of square to the naked eye. If you are looking at a 40x magnification image, it will become more apparent. To me it is just another consideration I use to disqualify a diamond, but imagine it is not as important to everyone.

GIA's cutoff is 1.05 for length/width ratio with square shapes on the reports, anything over that and they refer to it as rectangular modified brilliant etc instead of square.

To find which length to width ratio is pleasing to you, try this shape selector

Industry standard is 1.05 but personally a 1.05 looks out of square to me so I would stay under 1.04

It does to me too, 1.04 is a good tip.

ya, 1.05 is the cut off. Depends on how you mount it, if the corner are NSEW directions, it will be more noticeable.

Are there a lot of stones that have a 1.0 ratio exactly? Just wondering how rare it is and if it''s worth striving for. Thanks!
